Derby County Reunite with Sam Szmodics on Season-Long Loan
Derby County have brought Sam Szmodics back to Pride Park – this time with a commitment that runs far deeper than a short-term fix.
The 30-year-old forward has rejoined the Rams on a season-long loan from Ipswich Town, but the deal carries a significant sting in the tail: an obligation to buy at the end of the 2026-27 campaign. The trigger is understood to be appearance-based, with the eventual fee expected to land in the region of £2.7m.
For Derby, this is not a speculative punt. It is a calculated move built on recent memory and an old partnership that once lit up the Championship.
Rekindling a prolific partnership
Szmodics knows the Derby dressing room and Derby know him. He spent part of last season at Pride Park, making 13 appearances and scoring three times as John Eustace’s side came up just short – four points shy of the Championship play-off places.
Those numbers were modest. The reputation that precedes him is not.
Under Eustace at Blackburn Rovers in 2023-24, Szmodics tore through the second tier. He finished as the Championship’s leading scorer with 27 goals, the kind of return that forces clubs and chairmen to re-write their summer plans. Ipswich Town did exactly that, paying £9m to take him to Portman Road ahead of their first Premier League campaign in more than 20 years.
That move was supposed to be the next step in a late-blooming career. Instead, it became a reminder of how brutal the top flight can be.
From £9m hope to Championship rebuild
Szmodics managed four Premier League goals in an Ipswich side that could not cling on to its status. Relegation after a single season stripped away the glamour and exposed harsh realities. Form dipped, confidence wavered, and by last term he found the net just once in 18 Ipswich appearances before heading to Derby on loan.
The change of scenery helped. So did the manager.
“After being here for a couple of months, I knew what the squad and the club were all about – if I had anywhere to come back to, it was always going to be here,” he told the club website. There was no ambiguity in his ambition either: “Hopefully, we will go one step further than we did last year and get promoted to the Premier League.”
Derby are gambling that the player who terrorised Championship defences under Eustace at Blackburn is still there, waiting to resurface in familiar surroundings. The obligation to buy underlines that belief. This is not a short burst of goals they are chasing; it is a long-term attacking pillar for a promotion push that has already been framed publicly by the player himself.
A squad reshaped at both ends
While Szmodics returns, another Pride Park story is close to its conclusion.
Midfielder Liam Thompson is on the verge of a move to Mansfield Town. Now 24, he first broke into the Derby first team in 2021 after a six-year journey through the academy. With one year left on his contract, his departure would mark the end of a homegrown chapter, a reminder that evolution often demands emotional sacrifices.
As Thompson edges towards the exit and Szmodics walks back through the door with goals and expectation strapped to his shoulders, Derby’s intent is clear. The club are not just edging towards the play-off picture this time.
They are paying – and planning – to break it.
