Derby County Academy Prospects Shine in 3-1 Victory Against Mansfield
Derby County’s kids and fringe men did more than make up the numbers. They won a proper contest.
With the bulk of the senior squad earmarked for duty at Burton Albion on Saturday, John Eustace handed the stage to academy prospects and squad players at Mansfield Town – and they responded with a 3-1 victory that grew in authority as the evening wore on.
Brown Strikes, Smith Hits Back
Derby started with intent. Lars-Jorgen Salvesen, leading the line, drifted wide and whipped in the kind of cross every striker wants. Dajaune Brown didn’t waste it, timing his run and finish to give the visitors the lead and an early jolt of confidence.
Mansfield, though, had enough nous and quality to bite back. Released down the right, Michael Smith – once on Derby’s radar – sized up his defender, chopped the ball onto his left and bent a precise shot beyond Josh Vickers. The Derby goalkeeper, at full stretch, could do nothing about that one.
He more than made up for it moments later. David McGoldrick, still carrying that familiar menace in the final third, found space and let fly, only for Vickers to throw himself across goal and claw the effort away. It was a reminder that this was no gentle training exercise.
Woodwork, Open Spaces and a Swing in Momentum
The second half opened with the same edge. Smith almost turned the game on its head when he met a corner and crashed his effort against the bar, Vickers beaten this time by the frame of the goal.
That scare seemed to wake Derby up. From the centre of midfield, Owen Eames surged forward, driving into space and slipping in Salvesen. The Norwegian forward connected cleanly but fired straight at goalkeeper Lewis, a chance that begged for a cooler finish.
The game had opened up now. McGoldrick tried to punish Derby from distance, only for Vickers to get down sharply again, turning away a low drive that skidded awkwardly off the turf. Every attack looked like it might tilt the contest one way or the other.
Charlie Smith and Allen Take Control
The decisive moment came from a young man with a clean strike and no interest in caution. Charlie Smith picked up the ball around 20 yards out, set himself, and drilled a superb effort into the bottom corner. Lewis saw it, but he never got near it. Derby were back in front, and this time they looked determined to stay there.
You could feel another goal coming. Mansfield pushed, gaps appeared, and Derby’s youngsters showed they could exploit them. Corey Blackett-Taylor drove at the defence, worked an opening, and slipped the ball into Cruz Allen. One touch to steady himself, one to guide it past Harris. 3-1, and daylight at last.
For a side stitched together from academy hopefuls and players on the fringes, this was more than a fitness exercise. It was a statement that Derby’s depth, and their next generation, might have more to say this season than just filling out the bench.
