Deco Discusses Ronald Araujo's Impact at Liverpool Amid €50m Decision
Ronald Araujo has barely unpacked on Merseyside, but his future is already being weighed up in two cities.
Liverpool see him as the solution to two long-standing problems. Barcelona still see him as theirs.
The Uruguayan defender, on loan at Anfield this season, has started brightly in England despite being shunted away from his natural role. Andoni Iraola has pushed him wide, using him on the flank for extra defensive security rather than as a pure centre-back. It has worked. Liverpool look more secure, and Araujo looks comfortable, if not yet fully unleashed.
That versatility is exactly why Liverpool were willing to use up a valuable foreign player slot to get him in. He offers top-level cover at both right-back and centre-back, positions that have needed reinforcing in this squad for some time.
But there is a hard number attached to all this: €50m.
Araujo is not a permanent Liverpool player. He remains under contract with Barcelona, and the only way the Reds keep him beyond this season is by triggering the €50m buy option written into the deal. That decision sits parked for now, somewhere deep in Liverpool’s planning for next summer.
Barcelona, though, are already paying close attention.
Deco’s verdict
Sporting director Deco made that clear when he spoke to Sport this week, revealing he had tuned in to watch Liverpool’s latest outing.
"I watched the Liverpool match yesterday," he said. "I love him. I'm fond of him and want him to succeed. Personally, I love him. At times, he hasn't been able to play at his usual level.
"His time at Barca was spectacular. Sometimes, ideas don't align. He is under contract with us; it's still early days."
Those last four words carry weight. It’s still early days.
Barcelona know exactly what Araujo can be. At his peak in Catalonia, he was a cornerstone of their defence, aggressive, quick, dominant in duels. Yet there’s no hiding the fact his level dipped over the past couple of seasons. Form, fitness, tactical shifts – call it what you like – the trajectory flattened.
Liverpool clearly believe they can reverse that trend. Quickly.
If they succeed, both clubs stand to gain. Iraola gets an elite defender, capable of locking down a flank or marshalling the centre. Barcelona either welcome back a revitalised asset or cash in at full price. Araujo, meanwhile, gets the stage to prove he still belongs at the very top.
The stakes are obvious. A strong season and €50m starts to look like an opportunity. A stuttering one and that option becomes an expensive risk.
For now, Liverpool can simply enjoy the early returns. Araujo has added steel to a back line that needed it, adapting to an unnatural role without complaint and giving Iraola the kind of tactical flexibility every modern coach craves.
Barcelona will keep watching. Deco has already made that clear.
