Davide Frattesi is back home. Back in Rome, back in the Giustiniana streets where he first chased a ball, now returning as Lazio’s new midfield pillar.
The club have finally unveiled the 24-year-old as their latest signing, ending a brief spell of tension created by minor bureaucratic delays that slowed the move. The deal is clear: a paid loan from Inter worth €5 million, with an option to buy set at €10 million plus bonuses. Inter, wary of what he might become, have secured a 50% sell-on clause on any future capital gain.
For Frattesi, this isn’t just another transfer. It’s a turning point.
“When days like this happen, you go back and forth,” he told the club’s official channels, describing the final hours of negotiation. “It was a wait experienced with desire. It was tiring, but beautiful: it was worth it.”
He stepped back into familiar territory and immediately felt the weight of it.
“When I arrived, I recognized the paths I took as a child, when I trained at Giustiniana,” he said. “I'm returning with a different sense of responsibility and greater maturity. I think the time has come to take on important responsibilities, and I'm very happy to do so.”
From San Siro cameo to central role in Rome
His time at Inter never quite caught fire. There were flashes – powerful runs, late arrivals into the box, the kind of energy that made him a favourite in short bursts – but not the sustained run of starts a player of his age craves. Competition in Simone Inzaghi’s midfield was fierce, and Frattesi often watched the biggest nights from the bench.
Even so, he never lost the crowd.
“Even at Inter I had established a good relationship with the fans, despite playing little,” he reflected. “There were ups and downs, but we always got along.”
The problem was never affection. It was importance. He wanted to feel central, not supplementary.
“I needed to feel at the center of a project again: this welcome charges me a lot,” he admitted, clearly energised by the reaction of the Lazio supporters.
That is exactly what Gennaro Gattuso is offering him in Rome: a leading role in a rebuilt, more aggressive Lazio side. A dynamic midfielder who can break lines, press high, and arrive in the box is central to that vision, and Frattesi fits the profile perfectly.
A move months in the making
This switch did not come out of nowhere. Frattesi revealed that Lazio’s interest had been simmering for some time.
“We had been quite close in January, then for a series of reasons we were unable to close,” he explained. “This time they informed me a couple of days ago: there was only time to decide and settle the papers. I didn't have many doubts.”
The lack of hesitation says plenty. So does the way he keeps circling back to the idea of responsibility.
“I return with a different responsibility and with greater maturity. I think the time has come for me to take on important responsibilities and I do so very willingly,” he repeated, almost as if setting his own standard in public.
Expectations, pressure, and a new heartbeat in midfield
Coming back to your home city as a full Italy international carries a different kind of scrutiny. Every performance will be dissected, every dip in form magnified. Frattesi knows that. He is not shying away from it.
The financial structure of the deal underlines Lazio’s belief. €5 million for a loan is no small outlay, especially with a defined purchase option and performance-related bonuses on top. This is not a gamble on potential; it’s a statement that he is ready to lead now.
On the pitch, he brings exactly what this Lazio side has often lacked: a midfielder who can stitch together the defensive and attacking phases with tempo and bite.
