David Alaba’s Future: Father Confirms He Will Continue Playing

David Alaba is out of contract, but he is not out of options. Not by a long shot, according to his father and adviser, George Alaba.

“There have been numerous enquiries. In the USA, in Europe, everywhere,” Alaba Senior told Kronen Zeitung, pushing back against any talk that his son’s glittering career might be winding down. “It will continue, I know that. He will carry on.”

Real Madrid chose not to extend the 34-year-old’s deal beyond the summer after a series of injuries disrupted his time in Spain. Since then, the former Bayern Munich defender has been a free agent, a heavyweight name suddenly sitting on the open market.

Interest has not been hard to find. Bundesliga side Union Berlin have been loosely linked. So has Mexican giants Club America. And in Austria, the romantic idea of a return to boyhood club Austria Vienna refuses to go away.

A decision, though, is not far off.

“He will announce soon what happens next. He is doing excellently,” George Alaba said, sounding anything but worried. On Austria Vienna’s push to bring him home, he added: “David has had calls. They want to, he wants to as well, but at the moment it is a little too early for him. He still has a lot he wants to do in football.”

This is not the profile of a player easing gently towards retirement. This is a serial winner deciding where the final chapters of his career will be written.

From Munich Prodigy to Madrid Royalty

Between 2008 and 2021, he was tied to Bayern Munich, aside from a one-year loan at TSG Hoffenheim. At Bayern he played 431 competitive matches, scored 33 goals, delivered 55 assists and lifted trophy after trophy, including two Champions League titles. He shifted from left-back to centre-back, into midfield when needed, and became one of the most reliable, intelligent players of his generation.

Then came the move to Real Madrid. In the Spanish capital, long-running injury issues gradually reduced his role, but they did not stop his success. He added two more Champions League triumphs with Los Blancos, reinforcing his status as a player who belongs on the biggest stages.

His last competitive club appearance came in May, in Real’s 4-2 win over Athletic Club. He has also remained a central figure for Austria, featuring at the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

So the question is not whether David Alaba can still play at the top. The question is where he chooses to prove it next.
