Dan Burn Named Newcastle United Captain: A Dream Come True

Dan Burn admits it “means everything” to be named Newcastle United’s permanent captain – a boyhood fan handed the armband of his hometown club at the age of 32.

The decision, confirmed on Saturday by new head coach Matthias Jaissle, ends the vacancy created by Bruno Guimaraes’ summer departure and anchors the new era at St James’ Park to one of its most local, and most vocal, figures.

Burn, who joined Newcastle in 2021 and has racked up 193 appearances since, has worn the armband on several occasions. This time, it’s different.

“It’s an absolute honour to be named captain of Newcastle United,” he said after the announcement. “It’s always an immense privilege to represent this football club, especially when I have been trusted with the armband on previous occasions, but to lead the team on a permanent basis is going to be really special.

“It’s been an incredible journey since I joined the club four-and-a-half years ago – we’ve achieved some amazing things together and enjoyed some unforgettable moments.

“I believe there’s still more to come and I’m relishing the responsibility of pushing everybody every single day to make sure that is the case.”

A local lad who grew up a Magpies supporter, Burn has become one of the defining faces of Newcastle’s resurgence: a towering presence at the back, a vocal organiser, and a player whose celebrations with the Gallowgate End have come to symbolise the club’s reconnect with its fanbase.

Jaissle has seen enough, and moved quickly to formalise that influence.

“Dan is a natural leader and a perfect fit for the role of Newcastle United captain,” the German said. “He puts the interests of the team ahead of his own every time he steps onto the pitch and always gives maximum commitment in everything he does.

“Off the pitch, he leads by example in how he conducts himself. Not many people understand what this club means to the city better than Dan and that experience will be vital in helping guide our younger players through this period of change and adaptation.”
