Cristiano Ronaldo came closer to wearing Chelsea blue than most people realised during his stormy second spell at Manchester United.

Boehly met with Jorge Mendes. The talks were real, not fantasy-football gossip. Ronaldo, already deep into a turbulent second stint at United between 2021 and 2023, was on the table. For Boehly, the prospect was obvious: one of the world’s biggest stars, available at a moment when Chelsea wanted to announce themselves under new leadership.

The idea gathered pace. The new owner explored how a deal might work, how CR7 could be parachuted into a squad still only a year removed from winning the Champions League. Commercially, it made sense. From a global profile standpoint, it was irresistible.

But Chelsea still had a manager with authority. And the final word belonged to Thomas Tuchel.

Tuchel Slams the Door

The German coach, who had lifted the Champions League with the club just a year earlier, was not seduced by the marquee glow. According to The Athletic, Tuchel “made his firm opposition to any agreement for the Portuguese forward very clear on several occasions.”

That stance killed the move.

Boehly had sounded out Mendes, explored the contours of a potential transfer and weighed the impact Ronaldo could have in London. Yet Tuchel’s refusal to sign off blocked the path to Stamford Bridge and ended Chelsea’s flirtation with one of football’s defining figures.

Ronaldo stayed on his increasingly fraught course at United before eventually departing and landing at Al-Nassr. Chelsea moved on in a different direction under Boehly.

One firm “no” from Tuchel, and one of the most dramatic what-ifs of recent Premier League history never left the planning stage.
