Cristian Romero Leaves Tottenham for Atletico Madrid in €40m Move

Cristian Romero has drawn a firm line under his Tottenham career, confirming on Aug 14 that he is leaving north London after five turbulent, trophy-defining years – with Atletico Madrid expected to be his next destination in a €40 million deal.

The Argentina international, who arrived as a fiery centre-back and left as club captain, exits with 156 appearances, a stack of suspensions and, crucially, the medal that finally broke Spurs’ long drought. His man-of-the-match display in the 2025 Europa League final against Manchester United delivered Tottenham’s first major trophy in 17 years and sealed his place in the club’s modern history.

For a player so often at the heart of controversy, his farewell came in a markedly softer tone.

“Today, I say goodbye to a place that, for five seasons, was much more than a club,” Romero wrote on Instagram, framing his departure as something far deeper than a standard transfer.

The 28-year-old spoke of roots, not just results.

“It was my home, my challenge and the place where my family and I built such an important part of our lives,” he said, before stressing the emotional weight of the decision. “I leave with a heart full of memories and enormous pride for everything we lived and achieved together.”

Romero arrived with a clear mission. He leaves convinced he fulfilled it.

“When I arrived, I had a clear dream: to leave my name in this club’s history. I knew the only way was through hard work, sacrifice and achieving something that had seemed so difficult for so long: lifting a trophy again. And we did it.”

The defender never shied away from risk on the pitch and his time at Tottenham was rarely calm. Red cards, bans and full-blooded challenges became part of the weekly debate around him. Yet, as he chose his parting words, he steered away from the flashpoints.

“The journey wasn’t perfect, but I don’t want that to define my goodbye,” he wrote. “I choose to remember the happy moments, the lessons, the people who stood by me and, above all, the love I received during these five years.”

Tottenham now lose a leader and a lightning rod. Atletico Madrid, if the reported €40 million move is completed, will gain exactly that – a defender who divides opinion but never hides from the spotlight.
