Cristian Orozco Shines in Manchester United Friendly
Cristian Orozco has wasted no time showing Manchester United what they have on their hands.
The Colombian teenager, finally able to complete his move from Fortaleza after turning 18 this summer, has already found the net for the club’s Under-21s in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Aston Villa U21s.
He didn’t just score. He scored in a 5-0 demolition.
United’s youngsters tore through Villa as pre-season preparations ramped up, with Orozco adding his name to a lively scoresheet. Chido Obi, already in form after a brace against Ipswich earlier in the month, carried that momentum into this game and struck again against Premier League opposition. Ashton Missin helped himself to two goals, while Amir Ibragimov also got in on the act as Villa’s prospects were swept aside.
For Orozco, it was an early, sharp reminder of why United pushed so hard to get him.
The Red Devils agreed a deal for the highly rated defensive midfielder last year, with director of football Jason Wilcox driving an aggressive push for overseas talent. But regulations meant Orozco could only sign once he turned 18, finally putting pen to paper earlier in the summer.
He arrives with a captain’s pedigree. Orozco has already worn the armband for Colombia’s Under-17s and made five senior appearances for Fortaleza, including his most recent competitive outing in May in a Copa Colombia draw with Cucuta Deportivo.
United see the long-term potential. They are not about to rush him.
Plans are in place to let the teenager settle and develop in the academy and Under-21 environment rather than fast-tracking him into the first team. That pathway has become even more crowded after Old Trafford chief Michael Carrick moved decisively in the market to strengthen central midfield.
Andrey Santos came in as one major addition in the middle of the park. Youri Tielemans followed quickly, with United activating the £35million release clause in his Aston Villa contract to bring the Belgian to Manchester.
Those deals raise the bar for any young midfielder hoping to break through. For Orozco, it means patience will be essential.
His first goal in United colours hints at what he can bring. The wait to see it on a Premier League stage, though, is likely to be longer.
