Philippe Coutinho Joins Neymar at Santos for Brasileirão
Philippe Coutinho is back in Brazil and finally alongside Neymar – but not in the way many once imagined.
Santos confirmed on Monday that Coutinho has joined the club on a deal until the end of the season, reuniting the former Brazil teammates at Vila Belmiro and injecting fresh star power into the Brasileirão run-in.
The move carries a twist of irony. The two dazzled together for the national team, yet their club careers always seemed to miss each other by a beat. Coutinho spent five influential years at Liverpool before sealing a high-profile switch to Barcelona in January 2018, lifting two LaLiga titles in Spain. By then, Neymar had already gone, having left Barcelona for Paris St Germain in August 2017.
So they never shared a dressing room in Europe. They will now in Santos white.
The club released a slick video to mark Coutinho’s arrival, showing the midfielder walking into the dressing room and being greeted by Neymar. The cameras caught the moment, and the emotion.
"If it's a dream, I don't want to wake up," Neymar told Coutinho, a line that underlined just how surreal this late-career link-up feels for two players who defined a generation for Brazil.
Coutinho’s international story has stalled in recent years. His last appearance for Brazil came in March 2022, before injuries and form pushed him away from the spotlight. He returned to his boyhood club Vasco da Gama in 2024, a homecoming that promised stability but ended quickly, with his departure confirmed in February this year.
Now comes another home, another restart.
Neymar, 34, made his own emotional return to Santos last year, circling back to the club where he first exploded onto the global stage. After Brazil’s World Cup exit in July, he announced his international retirement, closing one chapter even as another opened on familiar turf.
The two have finally found each other at club level, not in Barcelona or Paris, but back where Brazilian football’s heartbeat is loudest. How much they can still shape matches is a question for the coming months.
