Como Signs Roberta Picchi to Long-Term Deal After Cancer Diagnosis

Como have tied forward Roberta Picchi to a new long-term contract after the 34-year-old was diagnosed with breast cancer, turning a landmark summer for the club into something far more personal and profound.

The newly promoted side, preparing for their first ever campaign in women's Serie A, confirmed that Picchi’s deal now runs until the end of the 2027-28 season. The extension, they stressed, forms part of their “continued commitment” to the player at the moment she needs it most.

Picchi is set to begin cancer treatment, with Como’s medical staff working alongside the specialists overseeing her care. The club moved quickly to make clear that she will not face that battle alone.

“Everyone at Como 1907 is alongside Roberta and will give her and her family all the support they need during the months ahead,” read a club statement. They also called for space and respect: “At this time, we ask that Roberta’s privacy is respected as she focuses on her treatment and recovery.”

On the pitch, Picchi has been central to Como’s rise. Last season she helped drive the team to the Serie B title, finishing 11 points clear of Lumezzane and sealing a historic first promotion to the top flight of Italian women’s football.

Off the pitch, she met the diagnosis with the same steel that has marked her career. Writing on social media, Picchi reflected: “Nothing should ever be taken for granted, and I feel fortunate. It’s time to play my match, but I’ll be back even more determined.”

Como, coached by Selena Mazzantini, open their Serie A season against AC Milan on 26 September. Their debut in the top division will carry an extra layer of meaning now, with a squad and a club rallying around one of their leaders as she starts the toughest contest of her life.
