Cologne's Kessler Addresses El Mala Transfer Talks

Cologne chief Christian Kessler has drawn a firm line under Said El Mala’s failed move to domestic rivals, insisting the collapse of talks came as no shock inside the club and left no bad blood on either side.

The sporting boss stressed that negotiations had been straight, clean and conducted with full respect, even if they ultimately hit a wall.

“It had been clear for several days that we weren't going to reach an agreement, it didn't come out of the blue for us,” Kessler said, as quoted by the official Bundesliga website. “It was simply the outcome of very respectful discussions between the two clubs. That's football – you don't always manage to find an agreement.”

The teenager’s ambition to step onto the Champions League stage has never been a secret. Kessler did not try to dress that up.

“It's perfectly understandable that a player of his age would consider a move to a Champions League club,” he admitted, framing El Mala’s stance as a natural step in the development of a rising talent rather than a point of conflict.

What Cologne have been watching closely is not what El Mala thinks, but how he behaves. On that front, Kessler painted the picture of a player fully locked in.

“I don't see any disappointment in him,” he said. “I'm in touch with Said almost every day, and we speak very openly about the situation. And judging by the way he conducts himself and wears our shirt, he's clearly very proud to be a Cologne player.”

The message is clear: no sulking, no stand-off, no split dressing room. Just a young forward expected to lead the line again at RheinEnergieStadion.

“I can only repeat what I've been saying for weeks: I'm convinced he’ll be playing for Cologne this season,” Kessler stated, doubling down on the club’s stance that El Mala will stay put for the coming campaign.

Yet no one at Köln is naïve about what continued progress will bring. If El Mala kicks on, the phone will ring again.

“Players who develop well here will naturally attract interest from other clubs,” Kessler said. “This certainly won’t be the last time in our lives that we've sat around a negotiating table with Borussia Dortmund.”
