Colchester United Sign Southampton's Moses Sesay on Loan

Colchester United have moved to sharpen their midfield by bringing in Southampton youngster Moses Sesay on a season-long loan.

The 19-year-old arrives with a strong academy pedigree. He left Chelsea’s youth set-up for Southampton last year and has already caught the eye at international level with England Under-18s.

Sesay is still waiting for his league debut with the Saints but has had a taste of first-team football, coming off the bench in last season’s EFL Cup. Colchester are betting that experience, and his technical profile, can translate into real impact in League Two.

U’s boss Danny Cowley made no attempt to hide his excitement at the signing.

“Moses is a very gifted player with the ball. He can really speed up the game,” Cowley told BBC Essex, underlining exactly why Colchester have pushed for the deal.

The club are also realistic. This is Sesay’s first loan spell, his first extended run away from the Premier League environment. Cowley knows there will be an adjustment period.

“He’s been involved with England. It’s his first loan, so he’s going to need time to adapt, but he’s got some really good attributes. We’re looking forward to working with him,” the Colchester manager added.

For Sesay, it is a clear opportunity: regular senior minutes, a demanding division, and a manager willing to give a young midfielder the ball and ask him to quicken the tempo. For Colchester, it is a calculated gamble on Premier League potential in a promotion race that leaves little room for passengers.
