City Maintains Perfect Start with Narrow Win Over Coventry
City’s perfect league start is still intact after a narrow 1-0 win over Coventry, sealed – predictably – by Erling Haaland. Now comes a very different examination: a European opener at the Estadio do Dragao, with Enzo Maresca ready to shake up his side.
Injuries cloud Coventry win
The Coventry game delivered three points but also a headache or two. Nico O’Reilly was set to start before a lower back problem in the warm-up forced him out, handing Enzo Fernandez a late call into the XI.
Then Deadline Day arrival Iliman Ndiaye limped off with a knock, another winger heading for the treatment room alongside Jeremy Doku. For a squad about to juggle four competitions, that is the kind of detail managers remember in the spring.
Maresca’s promise: the kids will play
Maresca had already nailed his colours to the mast. After beating Coventry, he name-checked Ayyoub Bouaddi, Ryan McAidoo and Ndiaye as players who “haven’t played in Champions League but they need to start,” adding that on Tuesday “they are going to start to get minutes in the Champions League.”
That wasn’t a throwaway line. It was a plan.
The question was whether Ndiaye’s knock would derail it. He has since been pictured in training, a clear hint he is on course to be involved in Porto. If he comes through, he is expected to start off the left, with McAidoo taking over on the right and Fernandez pushed into the No 10 role.
A new-look midfield, familiar steel at the back
Bouaddi is set to step into the spotlight alongside Elliot Anderson at the base of midfield, a youthful pairing tasked with protecting what should be an unchanged back four: Josko Gvardiol, Marc Guehi, Ruben Dias and Abdukodir Khusanov.
Matheus Nunes has been named in the travelling squad and could also see action, giving Maresca another option if the tempo spikes or the occasion starts to run away from his younger players.
Behind them, the defensive line has already shown enough cohesion domestically to earn trust in Europe. Maresca looks ready to lean on that stability while he experiments higher up the pitch.
Haaland to start – for now
Up front, the equation is simple and complicated all at once. Maresca has been blunt: Haaland will have to be rotated as City fight on four fronts. The workload is too heavy, even for a striker who seems to devour minutes and defenders with equal appetite.
But this is Porto, this is the Champions League, and City are still setting the tone for their season. So the prolific Norwegian is expected to lead the line again, even with rotation looming on the horizon.
Changes are coming. Youth is knocking loudly. The only real unknown is how quickly Maresca is willing to let the next generation carry the weight of nights like this.
