Christopher Nkunku Transfer Saga: Newcastle vs. Leipzig

Christopher Nkunku stands at a crossroads again, barely a year after arriving in Milan with the weight of expectation and a €37m fee on his shoulders. The numbers on the table say one thing. His instincts say another.

Italian reports claim Newcastle United have put forward the most attractive offer to AC Milan for the French forward, yet Nkunku’s preference is clear: he wants RB Leipzig.

The contrast in his status could hardly be sharper. At Milan, Ruben Amorim has frozen him out. Nkunku has been excluded from the squad, left without even a shirt number for the new season. On the market, available, and very much surplus to requirements – just 12 months after his move from Chelsea.

His output in Italy has not been disastrous. Eight goals and three assists in 35 competitive appearances is respectable, but not enough to convince Amorim he should be part of the next cycle. Milan are listening to offers. Serious ones are already on the table.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that both Newcastle and Leipzig are in direct contact with Milan. Talks are active, but not yet at the decisive stage. The real tension lies elsewhere: between the club offering the best deal and the club that offered Nkunku the best years of his career.

Newcastle, according to Calciomercato and Milan reporter Daniele Longo, have presented the most favourable financial package. The Premier League side are reportedly ready to put down around €30m to sign the France international, a figure that would draw a clean line under his short Milan spell and give Eddie Howe another high‑ceiling attacking option.

Yet Nkunku’s mind keeps drifting back to Germany.

At RB Leipzig, he was electric. From 2019 to 2023 he produced 70 goals and 56 assists in 172 games, numbers that turned him from a talented prospect into one of Europe’s most feared forwards. That period, by any measure, was the peak of his career so far.

The move to Chelsea in the summer of 2023, for €60m, was supposed to elevate him again. Instead, his form faded and never truly recovered, and the subsequent switch to Milan has not reignited it. The player who once terrorised Bundesliga defences now finds himself on the outside looking in, searching for the right stage to feel like himself again.

Newcastle can offer money, minutes and the Premier League spotlight. Leipzig can offer familiarity, a proven system and the comfort of a club where everything once clicked.

Milan wait, Newcastle push, Leipzig circle. Nkunku, caught between the best offer and the best memories, must decide which matters more at this stage of his career.
