Whether Fernandez features prominently today or is eased back in remains Alonso’s call, but the saga no longer hangs over every training session.

A squad that needs cutting, not padding

If today is a celebration of Alonso’s home debut, it is also a hard-edged audition for a number of players who may not be here by the time the window closes.

Chelsea’s squad is swollen and must be trimmed. The manager has “plenty of options” against Sociedad because several futures are unresolved.

• Aaron Anselmino was also earmarked for a loan, only for a hamstring injury in the final tour game against Johor Darul Ta'zim to halt those plans. He now looks set to remain while he recovers.

For all of them, minutes against Sociedad carry weight. Every touch feeds into Alonso’s looming decisions.
