Chelsea Sign Pep Chavarria and Set £120m Price for Enzo Fernandez
Chelsea have filled one hole in Xabi Alonso’s squad – and drawn a hard line in the sand over another.

The first part is simple. Chelsea have their new left-sided weapon.
On Wednesday morning, the club confirmed the signing of Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano, announcing the deal in a statement on their website. The 28-year-old, viewed as an attack-minded option for a wing-back role, has signed a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge running until 2031 after Chelsea agreed a package worth €19m plus €2m in add-ons with the La Liga side.
With Alonso expected to lean heavily on a back five at times, Chelsea have been rebuilding their options out wide. Marco Palestra is already in the door for the right flank, while Marc Cucurella’s sale to Real Madrid left a clear vacancy on the opposite side. Chavarria has been identified precisely for that gap: a left wing-back who can push high, stretch games and fit the aggressive, front-foot style the new head coach wants.
He will link up with his new team-mates at Cobham as preparations intensify for the 2026/27 campaign.

Enzo saga: interest, tension and a £120m wall
The real noise around Stamford Bridge right now swirls around Enzo Fernandez and Manchester City.
Chelsea are open to a sale, but only on their terms. The London club have set a £120m asking price for the Argentina international and, crucially, that figure is a fixed fee – not one padded out with add-ons. They will not force him out, but they are prepared to cash in if someone pays the full amount.
City’s interest is real. Enzo Maresca, who worked with Fernandez at Chelsea before leaving for the Etihad earlier this year, has long marked him down as a priority target. Fabrizio Romano reported that City have held talks with Fernandez’s agent, Javier Pastore, to express that admiration and to explore the possibility of a move.
This comes as City accelerate a separate deal for Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi and prepare for life after Rodri, who is bound for Barcelona. They want another major midfield name to anchor the next phase of Maresca’s project. Fernandez fits that bill.
There have been suggestions, notably from Ben Jacobs, that Chelsea’s stance could soften once the new season kicks off and the transfer window ticks towards its close. Writing on X, Jacobs suggested there is “no guarantee” the £120m price will hold beyond the start of the season and indicated that timing is important, with Chelsea keen to have their squad settled before their Premier League opener against Fulham on 24 August.
Romano, though, has pushed back hard on that idea.
On his YouTube channel, he outlined Chelsea’s position in stark terms. The club, he said, feel “very relaxed” about Fernandez’s situation and are “more than happy” to keep him. Internally, they believe the turbulence around the midfielder last season stemmed from issues in the wider players’ camp rather than from the player himself. Under Alonso, they expect Fernandez to stay, reset and become a central figure in the new project.
From Chelsea’s side, the message is blunt: the price is £120m, and it is not moving.
City, for their part, are not expected to go that high. They are hoping there will be room to negotiate, banking on the possibility that Chelsea might blink as the deadline draws closer. The entire saga, Romano stressed, hangs on the numbers. If Chelsea hold firm, the deal becomes “complicated”. If they soften, the door opens.
Overlaying all of this is the strain between the two clubs. Chelsea have not forgotten the Maresca episode – his departure from Stamford Bridge and swift appointment at City earlier in the year has left a residue of bad blood. That tension, Romano noted, will shape how hard Chelsea push in any negotiations. If they are to lose Fernandez to City, they want to do it on their terms and at their price.
Chelsea’s stance is edging towards an ultimatum. Romano has described it as a “take it or leave it” situation, with the club unwilling to let talks drag into the final days of the window. In a follow-up video, he underlined that Fernandez and his camp should “forget about” a late-window move, such is Chelsea’s determination to avoid a drawn-out saga.
So the lines are clear. Chavarria is in, locked down until 2031. Fernandez is wanted, but only for £120m, cash on the table.
Now it is over to Manchester City: do they pay the premium for Maresca’s ideal midfielder, or walk away and leave Chelsea to build Alonso’s midfield around Enzo for the long haul?
