Chelsea Reject Leeds United Loan Bid for Mykhailo Mudryk
Chelsea have turned down an opening loan bid from Leeds United for winger Mykhailo Mudryk, but the story is far from over.
The Yorkshire club approached Chelsea with a proposal for a season-long deal, yet their first offer fell well below what the London side were prepared to accept. Talks are ongoing. Nobody has walked away from the table.
Mudryk, 25, is understood to be open to the move and has already agreed in principle to spend the season away from Stamford Bridge as he chases rhythm, minutes and a reset to his career. After 20 months out of the game because of a positive test for the banned substance meldonium, he knows he cannot afford another year on the fringes.
His suspension ended in July. Since then, he has been eased back into action during Chelsea’s pre-season tour under new head coach Xabi Alonso, making several appearances from the bench. Enough to remind clubs of his raw pace and direct running. Not enough to guarantee him a central role in Alonso’s first competitive line-up.
Premier League Priority
Premier League football remains his priority. Mudryk has made that clear in recent conversations, even with interest coming from Strasbourg – Chelsea’s sister club under the BlueCo umbrella – and from Serie A. He wants the intensity, the spotlight, the noise of English football.
That is where Leeds have stepped in.
The Championship side have moved to the front of the queue because they are willing to take Mudryk on a straight loan with no option to buy. For Chelsea, that detail matters. It keeps control of his long-term future firmly in west London while shifting his wages off the books for a season.
Leeds' Summer Activity
Leeds have been busy already this summer. Harry Wilson has arrived from Fulham to bolster the attack. Tarik Muharemovic has come in from Sassuolo at centre-back. James Trafford has joined from Manchester City to compete in goal, and Nico Elvedi has been recruited from Borussia Monchengladbach for defensive depth. Mudryk would be the headline addition in a window that has quietly rebuilt the spine of the side.
Earlier in the window, Leeds also explored a move for Chelsea striker Liam Delap, though that interest has since cooled. Their focus now is on the Ukrainian winger.
They are not alone. Brentford remain in the background, still intrigued by a player they tried to sign months before Chelsea beat them to his signature from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023 for an initial £61m. The Bees’ latest interest, however, came with a catch: they wanted an option to make the move permanent. Chelsea pushed back on that, unwilling to lock in a cut-price exit for a player they still believe could recover his value.
Coventry City have also registered their interest, while the Strasbourg route stays open as part of the wider BlueCo strategy. Chelsea are weighing up sending other players to the French club as well, including midfielder Dario Essugo, as they look to spread minutes and development opportunities across their network.
For now, the likeliest outcome is that Mudryk leaves Stamford Bridge before the window closes. Keeping him as a squad option has not been completely dismissed, but the expectation inside the club leans strongly towards a loan.
Where he ends up will say plenty about Chelsea’s long-term faith in him – and about which club is willing to bet that a year of football can turn a stalled £61m signing back into a game-changer.
