Chelsea Closing in on Pep Chavarria Transfer
Chelsea are closing in on a £16.3million move for Rayo Vallecano defender Pep Chavarria as Xabi Alonso’s Stamford Bridge rebuild gathers pace.
The 28-year-old, a left-sided defender who helped Rayo reach last season’s Conference League final, is expected to come in as direct competition for Jorrel Hato after Marc Cucurella’s departure to Real Madrid. Talks are advanced and all sides are confident the deal will be completed, with Chelsea having tracked Chavarria for much of the summer.
Alonso leans into experience
Chavarria does not arrive with the profile of a typical Chelsea signing from recent years. At 28, with only four seasons of top-flight football behind him following his move from Segunda Division side Real Zaragoza in 2022, he is hardly a long-term “project” player.
That is precisely the point.
Under Alonso, Chelsea have pivoted away from speculative youth-heavy recruitment towards players who can deliver immediately. Chavarria would continue a clear pattern: the club have already brought in 35-year-old striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton and 36-year-old Jordan Henderson, who joined on Monday after leaving Brentford.
Alonso wants know-how. Dressing-room voices. Players who have seen enough of the game to steady a squad that lost its way last season.
If Chavarria signs, he will become Chelsea’s third defensive arrival of the summer. Right-sided full-back Marco Palestra joined from Atalanta in July, while the capture of Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace was confirmed last week. Bit by bit, the back line is being rebuilt in Alonso’s image.
No move for Diogo Costa
One position Chelsea will not be touching, for now, is in goal.
Despite persistent links with Porto’s Diogo Costa, there has been no contact between the clubs and no active interest from Chelsea in the Portugal international, who played five times at the World Cup. The rumour mill has been busy; the recruitment department has not.
Alonso is content with his current options. Robert Sanchez remains last season’s number one, with Filip Jorgensen as understudy and 21-year-old Belgian Mike Penders also in the group. For a club so often associated with big-name goalkeeping signings, that stability is striking.
Chalobah heads for Como, exits gather pace
While experience comes in, familiar faces continue to head for the door.
A deal was agreed on Monday for Trevoh Chalobah to join Como, where former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas is preparing to lead the Italian club into their first Champions League campaign. An agreement is in place between Chelsea, Como and the player, with the Blues inserting a sell-on clause to secure a share of any future transfer fee.
Chalobah joins Cucurella, Tyrique George and Andrey Santos among the latest departures from Stamford Bridge as the club trims a bloated squad and resets its wage bill.
The churn is significant. The direction, this time, is deliberate.
From scattergun to targeted
After a dismal season that ended in 10th place, Chelsea’s hierarchy accepted that the strategy of hoarding young, raw talent had to change. The club needed players who could compete for the title now, not in three or four years.
The response has been bold. In July, Chelsea broke their transfer record to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117m, a statement deal for a player viewed as central to Alonso’s attacking plans. On Sunday, Argentina international Valentin Barco arrived from Strasbourg, another addition with the profile to impact the first team quickly.
Layer that on top of the experienced core Alonso is assembling, and the picture becomes clearer: this is not a slow rebuild. It is an accelerated reset.
If Chavarria’s move is finalised as expected, he will walk into a dressing room that looks and feels very different from the one that limped to mid-table last term. The question now is not whether Chelsea are changing, but how quickly that change can drag them back into the title conversation.
