Chelsea's Moisés Caicedo Fitness Decision Ahead of Premier League Clash
Chelsea will leave it as late as possible before deciding whether Moisés Caicedo is fit to face the Premier League champions on Sunday, with a final call due just 24 hours before kick-off.
The 24-year-old’s season has barely started and already feels stop–start. He missed the opening league win over Fulham, then sat out the midweek Carabao Cup victory against Luton Town. When he finally returned, coming off the bench in the 68th minute of the wild 4-3 win against Brighton & Hove Albion, his night lasted only 14 minutes.
Caicedo went down, needed treatment on the pitch, then walked off under his own steam. On its own, that might have been reassuring. The fact it’s a recurring problem has set alarm bells ringing at Cobham.
Alonso wary as derby looms
At his pre-match press conference on Friday, Alonso cut a cautious figure whenever Caicedo’s name came up. The midfielder was a cornerstone of Chelsea’s campaign last season, even as they stumbled to 10th, and his status inside the dressing room is clear.
Vice-captain behind Reece James. Ecuador international. Already 149 appearances since arriving from Brighton in August 2023. He is part of the spine, and this is a derby week.
“We will check tomorrow, tomorrow is the last decision for the squad on Sunday,” Alonso told reporters, refusing to be drawn into guarantees. He urged calm around the situation while the medical team complete their work. “We [need to] not worry, we need to check tomorrow and take the final decision.”
Chelsea can ill afford to lose another midfield pillar after Enzo Fernandez’s summer move to Manchester City. That departure forced a reset in the middle of the pitch, and the club moved aggressively to give Alonso fresh options: the energetic Valentin Barco and seasoned campaigner Jordan Henderson.
New-look midfield put on notice
Alonso insists he has enough variety to handle the Premier League grind even if Caicedo fails his fitness test. He likes the mix.
“[We have] different qualities, personalities,” he said when asked about his choices. “Valentin’s young, but he has come with great energy. We have Hendo, he has the composure, the mentality, he knows what’s going on in the games. He’s getting closer, closer to playing time.”
The pressure will only ramp up on that group if Caicedo is ruled out. This isn’t just any fixture. Both London rivals have taken maximum points from their first two league games. Arsenal have beaten Coventry City and Aston Villa. Chelsea have edged past Fulham and Brighton.
Something has to give.
If Caicedo doesn’t make it, Alonso is ready to shuffle pieces. He name-checked Romeo Lavia, James and Malo Gusto as players who could step inside and offer solutions in midfield. It underlined his belief that the system, not one individual, must carry Chelsea through this early-season test.
“We have Rom (Romeo Lavia), Reece (James) as well, Malo (Gusto) – he can play [in midfield],” Alonso said.
Whether that plan has to be activated depends on one thing: what the doctors tell him on Saturday.
