Chelsea close in on £52 million Lacroix signing
Chelsea are closing in on one of the most expensive defensive signings of the summer, with Crystal Palace centre-back Lacroix set to move across London in a deal worth around £52 million ($69m), according to The Athletic.
The Frenchman is due to undergo his medical on Friday and, if all goes to plan, will sign a long-term contract tying him to Stamford Bridge until 2032. A statement of faith, and of intent.
From Wolfsburg to west London
Lacroix has not arrived on Chelsea’s radar by accident. Since June, he has been one of the club’s priority targets, bracketed with a handful of alternatives including Como defender Jacobo Ramon. The conversation in the recruitment meetings kept circling back to the same name, though. The Palace defender who had grown too big for his current role.
Two seasons in the Premier League have transformed him. Palace paid an initial €18m to bring him from Wolfsburg in 2024; his valuation has since rocketed into the premium bracket. That rise tells its own story.
At 190cm, Lacroix has become the spine of Palace’s back line. Last season he played 55 games in all competitions, a relentless workload for a central defender, and still found the energy to help lift the Community Shield and the Conference League trophy. Those performances carried him all the way into France’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.
You do not let that kind of profile leave without a fight. Palace know it. Chelsea know it even more.
Chelsea’s defensive shake-up
Lacroix’s arrival is likely to jolt Chelsea’s defensive hierarchy. Xabi Alonso, preparing for his first season in charge, will have to make hard calls on several existing centre-backs the moment this deal is rubber-stamped.
Benoit Badiashile, Tosin Adarabioyo, Wesley Fofana, Trevoh Chalobah and Mamadou Sarr all sit in the firing line of squad reshaping. Some will stay and compete. Others will be pushed towards the exit as Chelsea try to balance both numbers and finances at the back.
Alonso will not have the luxury of time. Once the transfer is complete, he must fold Lacroix into his defensive structure quickly, using what remains of pre-season to establish partnerships and patterns. Chelsea are paying elite money; they will expect an immediate influence, not a slow burn.
Palace forced back into the market
For Palace, the deal triggers a different kind of scramble. Lose your defensive cornerstone in late summer and you cannot simply promote from within and hope for the best.
The club have already moved onto the next phase: replacing him. Augsburg’s Chrislain Matsima has been identified as a leading target, with Trabzonspor’s Chibuike Nwaiwu also under consideration as an alternative. Two profiles, one urgent need.
Palace must now convince one of them to step into a sizeable void before the transfer window shuts. Fail, and the defensive stability that underpinned their recent progress could start to fray.
Chelsea, meanwhile, are betting that Lacroix will be the anchor of a new era at Stamford Bridge. Palace are betting they can rebuild a defence without the man who made theirs look so secure. Only one of those gambles can pay off fully once the season begins.
