Chelsea Faces Pressure as Top Clubs Eye Josh Acheampong

Chelsea’s defence is leaking goals, but one of their brightest young defenders is attracting more attention than ever.

Josh Acheampong, the 20-year-old England Under-21 international, is being tracked by several of Europe’s biggest clubs, with interest strong enough to trigger what has been described in Spain as “alarm” at Stamford Bridge.

For a long time, Chelsea’s stance has been blunt: Acheampong is not for sale. Liverpool and Real Madrid have both looked at him before, only to be told he was effectively untouchable. That position is now being tested.

Spanish outlet AS report that interest across the continent remains intense, even as Acheampong fights to turn promise into a permanent starting role in west London. He has not yet nailed down a regular place in the XI, but inside the club the view has been consistent – he is one to build around, not cash in on.

Xabi Alonso, the Chelsea manager, is said to still see Acheampong as central to his plans for this season. In a squad under scrutiny, that backing matters. It may not be enough.

Because the suitors are not going away. Liverpool and Real Madrid have already been mentioned. Bayern Munich can be added to that list, with previous reporting from Christian Falk for CF Bayern Insider linking the Bundesliga champions with the defender.

The timing could hardly be more awkward for Chelsea. They were dismantled 3-0 by Brentford last night and currently own the worst defensive record in the Premier League, with 12 goals conceded in their first five games. As the back line creaks, the market value of one of their most promising defenders rises, and so does the temptation elsewhere.

That is the dilemma. Acheampong may soon have the kind of offers that force a decision. Stay at a club still searching for defensive stability, or move into a set-up where trophies and structure look more certain.

If Chelsea cannot quickly tighten up and offer a convincing sporting project, the question will not be how much they rate Josh Acheampong.

It will be whether they can actually keep him.
