Figures at Stamford Bridge are confident the paperwork will be wrapped up before the Premier League season kicks off. Those close to the 24-year-old go further, insisting a full agreement is already in place on a deal through 2032, with Chelsea holding an option to push it to 2034.
Either way, the message is clear: Joao Pedro is now central to Chelsea’s long-term project.
From big fee to big return
Signed from Brighton last summer for an initial £55m, plus £5m in add-ons, Joao Pedro arrived with expectation and scrutiny. Inside the club, that debate is over. He is viewed as one of the major successes of the new recruitment drive.
The numbers back it up. Last season he became the first Chelsea striker since Diego Costa to hit 20 goals in a campaign without the help of penalties. No padding from the spot. Just finishes from open play that dragged Chelsea through games and gave structure to a previously disjointed attack.
His impact travelled beyond domestic competition too. Joao Pedro scored three times in Chelsea’s Club World Cup-winning run last summer, delivering on the global stage the club’s owners are desperate to dominate.
And he has not eased off. Eight goals in seven pre-season matches have underlined his status as the man in form and the obvious focal point for the months ahead.
New season, new number
That surge has brought more than just a new contract. It has brought the most scrutinised shirt at Chelsea.
The club have handed Joao Pedro the number nine, a jersey that has weighed heavily on several predecessors and become a symbol of misfires and false dawns at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea are betting that his blend of movement, aggression and penalty-box instincts can finally break that cycle.
The change leaves Liam Delap without the number and, more significantly, on the market. The 21-year-old is available for around £50m and is drawing interest from Nottingham Forest and Leeds United as he looks for a clearer pathway to regular football.
Fulham opener and the supporting cast
All of this frames Monday night at Craven Cottage. Joao Pedro is expected to lead the line when Chelsea open their Premier League campaign at Fulham, walking out as the club’s new number nine and, contract pending, its long-term attacking cornerstone.
Behind him, the depth chart has been reshaped. New signings Danny Welbeck and Emmanuel Emegha are set to provide cover this season, offering different profiles but orbiting around the Brazilian as the first-choice striker.
