Chelsea's Interest in Atalanta's Rising Star Honest Ahanor

Chelsea have stepped up their interest in Atalanta’s rising star Honest Ahanor, opening preliminary talks with both the Serie A club and the defender’s representatives, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The London club, already deep into a long-term rebuild, have identified the 18-year-old Italy international as a key defensive target. Early in the summer, Brighton tested Atalanta’s resolve with a €34m bid, but the offer was firmly rejected. Sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli underlined in July that Atalanta are not prepared to part with any of their top talents, explicitly including Ahanor in that group.

That stance will be the first major obstacle for Chelsea.

Ahanor only arrived in Bergamo in 2025, joining from Genoa in a €16m deal, and has quickly become one of the most talked-about young defenders in Italy. Comfortable as a left wing-back or on the left side of a back three, he offers the kind of tactical flexibility modern clubs crave, especially in systems that demand defenders step into midfield and attack space.

His rise has been rapid. Ahanor has already made 28 Serie A appearances for Atalanta and earned his senior Italy debut in June under caretaker coach Silvio Baldini, a clear sign of how quickly he has climbed the national pecking order.

Giuntoli, now beginning his first season in charge of Atalanta’s sporting operations, has been reunited with Maurizio Sarri in Bergamo after their successful spell together at Napoli. The pair are tasked with keeping Atalanta competitive in Serie A and in Europe while holding on to the core of a young, ambitious squad. Letting Ahanor go so early in his development would cut against that project.

Chelsea, though, already know Atalanta’s negotiating table well. The clubs have done business this summer, with Marco Palestra swapping the Gewiss Stadium for Stamford Bridge in a €60m move. That deal proved Atalanta will sell at the right price — but only on their terms.

Whether Chelsea are willing to push that far again, and whether Atalanta are prepared to cash in on another cornerstone of their future, will define how far these “preliminary talks” really go.
