Chelsea’s clear-out under Xabi Alonso is starting to bite, and some big defensive pieces are being moved off the board.
The new head coach has placed eleven players on the market and, according to multiple reports, three of them are now close to the exit door as the club tries to trim a swollen squad and sharpen its focus.
Alonso’s ruthless reset
Chelsea have been relentless in this window. Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix, Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck headline a flurry of arrivals, with another signing already agreed this week. The recruitment drive has been aggressive, ambitious – and expensive.
To keep that machine running, the outgoings have had to match the intensity.
Over £100m has already been banked from the sales of Andrey Santos, Marc Cucurella and Tyrique George. Yet the dressing room remains crowded, and the club hierarchy knows more departures are essential if Alonso is to build anything resembling a coherent, competitive core.
Even big names are not immune. Enzo Fernandez, Pedro Neto and Malo Gusto have all been linked with moves away, with Neto now drawing serious interest from Manchester City. The Athletic reports that none of that trio sit on a protected “not for sale” list this summer.
They are not alone. The same report lists Liam Delap, Nicolas Jackson, Marc Guiu, David Datro Fofana and Emmanuel Emegha among those available, while Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi and Trevoh Chalobah are all expected to move on.
Chalobah to Como, Badiashile and Disasi next
The first domino in that defensive reshuffle appears to be Trevoh Chalobah.
After weeks of negotiations, Chelsea have finally reached an agreement with Serie A side Como for the academy graduate, who looks set to be the first centre-back to depart under Alonso. It is a move that underlines just how deep the overhaul runs: a homegrown defender, once trusted in big games, now surplus to requirements.
The pressure will not ease there.
Badiashile and Disasi are both closing in on their own exits, with journalist Nicolo Schira detailing advanced moves for the pair.
On Badiashile, Schira reports an agreement in principle with Napoli on a deal running until 2031 – a one-season loan followed by a four-year contract, with wages of €2.8m per year. Talks between Napoli and Chelsea are said to be progressing over a loan with an option to buy, a structure that gives the Italian side flexibility while offering Chelsea a potential future fee.
Disasi, meanwhile, has been searching for a new home after his loan at West Ham last season. Crystal Palace are, according to Schira, now closing in on the France international. The proposed move is a loan with an option to buy, which could turn into an obligation if certain conditions are met.
If all three deals are completed, Alonso will have removed an entire layer of his central defensive depth in a single window. It is bold, risky, and very deliberate.
Mudryk’s return and a different kind of decision
Not every call Alonso faces this summer is financial or tactical. Some are emotional.
Mykhaylo Mudryk’s return from a doping ban has handed the manager one of his most delicate early decisions. The winger stepped back onto the pitch in Chelsea’s defeat to Juventus this week, a brief cameo that carried far more weight than its 10 or 15 minutes suggested.
“Yes, for sure, I’m really pleased for him. It was emotional for everyone from the club to see him back,” Alonso said afterwards. He revealed he had told Mudryk before the game that he planned to give him those late minutes. “He was thrilled, for sure. It was, after such a long period, to be back on the pitch, it was a great feeling for him and a great feeling for everyone as well.”
The human side of the job is clear there. The sporting side is less forgiving. Alonso must now decide how, and how quickly, Mudryk fits into a squad being reshaped at speed.
Chelsea’s summer is not just about names in and out. It is about who Alonso trusts to carry his project. With defenders heading for Italy, the Premier League and Serie A alike, and stars like Neto and Fernandez still attracting glances from elsewhere, this rebuild is only just finding its rhythm.
