Chelsea 2026/27 Squad Numbers Announced
Chelsea have locked in their squad numbers for the 2026/27 season – and the list carries a few clear signals about where the hierarchy now lies under Xabi Alonso.
The headline change? The number 9 shirt has a new owner.
Joao Pedro takes the No 9
Joao Pedro has stepped into one of the most scrutinised shirts at Stamford Bridge, swapping his number 20 for the centre-forward’s 9. Liam Delap, who wore 9 last season, moves to 12 as the pecking order in attack subtly reshapes.
The defensive line has been refreshed too. Wesley Fofana now wears 3, filling the vacancy left by Marc Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid. That switch frees up 29 for summer signing Pep Chavarria, who steps straight into a number with recent history attached.
At the back, there’s another notable reshuffle. Tosin Adarabioyo has been pushed out of his familiar 4 and into 38. The number 4 shirt now belongs to new signing Valentin Barco, a clear show of faith in the young defender.
New boys grab the low numbers
Two more summer arrivals go straight into single digits. Marco Palestra takes 2, while Maxence Lacroix claims 5, a shirt previously worn by Benoit Badiashile. It underlines their expected importance in Alonso’s plans.
Badiashile, Axel Disasi and Marc Guiu, all omitted from pre-season involvement, have not been given squad numbers at all. Their absence from the list is as telling as any of the changes.
In midfield, Dario Essugo moves from 14 to 16, making way for one of the most experienced names in the squad. Jordan Henderson, newly arrived at Stamford Bridge, will wear 14 as he slots into the heart of Alonso’s side.
Club-record signing Morgan Rogers has been handed 17, the shirt vacated by Andrey Santos following his move to Manchester United.
Academy faces step into the frame
Chelsea’s production line continues to feed the first-team picture. Academy talents Reggie Watson, Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli and Tayo Subuloye have all been given numbers – 31, 32 and 37 respectively – after catching the eye during the pre-season tour in Australia and Asia.
There has been no formal confirmation that the trio are fully promoted, but the allocation of numbers suggests they will not be far from Alonso’s thoughts once the competitive games begin.
