Celtic Sign Haissem Hassan: Deal Details Revealed

Celtic’s long pursuit of Haissem Hassan has ended with the winger in Glasgow – and the numbers behind the deal look far leaner than many expected.

For most of the summer, figures of up to £9 million were attached to the Egypt international’s name as talks with Real Oviedo dragged on. That price tag set alarm bells ringing among some supporters, who wondered how far the club were willing to stretch for a player still to prove himself at the very top level.

Spanish reports now suggest the reality is very different.

According to La Voz de Asturias, Celtic have agreed an initial fee of around €5.5 million, with a further €2 million available in performance-related bonuses. Only if those add-ons are triggered would the total package climb towards €7.5 million.

So the headline number shrinks. The structure of the deal matters just as much.

Oviedo are said to have secured a 20 per cent sell-on clause, but it is tied only to any profit Celtic make on a future transfer, not the full sale price. If Celtic buy at €5.5 million and later sell for the same amount, Oviedo get nothing from that clause. If Hassan explodes in Glasgow and moves on for a sizeable fee, then the Spaniards finally cash in again.

Even then, Oviedo will not keep the entire Celtic windfall. Villarreal, who sold Hassan to Oviedo for around €700,000 in 2024, reportedly hold the right to 40 per cent of Oviedo’s profit on this latest sale.

On a €5.5 million upfront payment from Celtic, Oviedo’s profit is estimated at roughly €4.8 million. From that, Villarreal would take their cut, which helps explain why reports in Spain indicate Oviedo’s immediate gain sits closer to €3.6 million.

For Celtic, the key takeaway is clear: the guaranteed outlay appears far below the £9 million figure that dominated early headlines. The club commit a moderate base fee, then effectively bet on Hassan’s impact to unlock the rest.

Any extra money only leaves Glasgow if the winger delivers – in appearances, performances, or team achievements substantial enough to trigger the agreed bonuses. Oviedo’s sell-on clause only bites if Hassan’s value rises again and Celtic choose to cash in.

The Scottish champions have not released any official financial details, so the numbers remain unconfirmed. But if the Spanish breakdown is accurate, Celtic have landed a highly rated international on terms that look far more like a calculated opportunity than a reckless gamble.
