With minutes at Anfield drying up and his contract running down to next summer, the decision to send him on loan to St Mirren reads less like a development move and more like a quiet goodbye. Unless something dramatic happens over the next few months, it’s hard to see a route back.

For Ramsay, the equation is brutally simple. If he lights up the Scottish Premiership in Paisley, Liverpool still seem unlikely to extend his deal. At that point, a permanent switch to Craig McLeish’s side could suddenly look very attractive – regular football, a manager who trusts him, a chance to rebuild his career on home soil. If the loan doesn’t catch fire, any faint Anfield hopes dim even further.

What really underlines his slide is what happened last season. Even when Liverpool were stripped at right-back for long spells, Ramsay never got close. With Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley both sidelined for significant periods, Arne Slot repeatedly patched the position with midfielders. Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones found themselves shunted into an unfamiliar role while a natural right-back watched on.

That pecking order spoke volumes. Bradley, the Northern Ireland captain, is still a few months away from returning, and Slot came under heavy fire for his display at Newcastle on Sunday. Yet Liverpool still felt comfortable letting Ramsay walk out on loan, despite Andoni Iraola’s ongoing problems on that flank. If there was real faith in him as cover, he’d be nowhere near the departure lounge.

Strip away the sentiment and the picture is stark: at 23, Ramsay has almost certainly played his last game for the Reds. Four years on from his move from Aberdeen, the promise has never quite translated into a sustained run in the side, interrupted by injuries, competition and changing managers.

It hasn’t unfolded the way he imagined when he first walked through the doors at Melwood. Now the stage shifts to St Mirren, where the stakes for his next step could hardly be clearer.
