Calvin Ramsay Joins St Mirren on Loan to Rebuild Career

Calvin Ramsay has drawn a line under his Liverpool career and headed home, admitting he was desperate for a return to Scotland as he looks to rebuild what once seemed a glittering future.

The 23-year-old right-back has joined St Mirren on loan for the 2026/27 season, subject to international clearance, in a move that effectively ends his time at Anfield. His Liverpool contract expires next summer and the decision has already been made: there will be no new deal. He will leave on a free.

So this is a reset.

“I feel really good, really excited,” Ramsay told the St Mirren media team after completing the switch. “I've been in and trained and met all the boys, so yeah, I'm looking forward to it.

“I know the league and I wanted to come back up here and try and show what I can do and rebuild myself again. I feel like it's a good place to come. I want to try and perform, work as hard as I can and see where that takes me.”

The pull of familiarity mattered. So did the stadium.

“It's a really tough place to come for opposition teams and I think the pitch is really good as well from when I played here,” he said. “It's a good set up, it's a good club and I'm just excited to get going.

“I spoke to the manager a couple of times before I came up and he got his plan across and what he wanted to do.

“It's probably a different St Mirren compared to the last few years. That'll suit me. I'm comfortable on the ball, I'm composed, I like to get on it and try and create things and make things happen.”

When Liverpool signed Ramsay from Aberdeen in June 2022 in an initial £4.2m deal, he was billed as one of the brightest young full-backs in the British game. The move looked like a natural next step for a Scotland international with attacking instincts and the confidence to play.

It never caught fire.

Injuries bit hard and early, halting his rhythm and stalling his progress at the very moment he needed a clear run. Loan spells were meant to provide that platform. They never quite did.

Across temporary stints at Preston North End, Bolton Wanderers, Wigan Athletic and Kilmarnock over the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons, Ramsay managed only 26 appearances in total. For a young defender needing games, that number tells its own story.

Back at Liverpool for the 2025/26 campaign under Arne Slot, he stayed on Merseyside and was involved often enough on paper, named in the matchday squad 20 times. But he only stepped on the pitch twice, his inclusion largely driven by a defensive injury crisis rather than a genuine breakthrough.

Now comes a cleaner slate in Paisley.

St Mirren get a technically assured, ball-playing full-back with a point to prove and a career to relaunch. Ramsay gets what he wanted: a return to a league he knows, a club that has sold him a clear plan, and the chance to play regular football in front of supporters who will judge him on what he does next, not what went wrong before.

From January, he will be free to speak to other clubs about his long-term future. How many suitors line up may depend on what happens in a St Mirren shirt over the next few months.
