Calvin Ramsay Joins St Mirren on Loan: A Reset for His Career
Calvin Ramsay has drawn a line in the sand. Now he wants to rebuild.
The Scotland right-back has joined St Mirren on a season-long loan from Liverpool, a move he sees not as a step back, but as a reset.
“I know the league and I wanted to come back up here and try and show what I can do and rebuild myself again,” the 23-year-old said, laying out his intentions with no fuss.
Ramsay left Aberdeen for Liverpool in a £4.1m deal four years ago, a high-profile switch that was supposed to launch him into the elite. Instead, his time at Anfield has been stop-start, limited to just four first-team appearances in red.
The search for rhythm has taken him across the English and Scottish game: Preston, Bolton, Wigan, Kilmarnock. Four loan spells, 26 games, flashes of what persuaded Liverpool to buy him, but never the sustained run he craves.
That is what this move to Paisley is about.
“I feel like it's a good place to come,” he said. “I want to try and perform, work as hard as I can and see where that takes me.
“It's probably a different St Mirren compared to the last few years. That'll suit me. I'm comfortable on the ball, I'm composed, I like to get on it and try and create things and make things happen.”
St Mirren, under Craig McLeish, are evolving. Ramsay believes he fits that evolution: a full-back who wants the ball, wants responsibility, wants to drive the game rather than simply patrol his flank.
McLeish is just as clear about why he pushed this deal through.
He called Ramsay “exceptional” and believes the defender brings a “different dynamic” to his squad, a line that hints at a more adventurous approach down the right.
“It's a really important year for Calvin where he needs to find regular football to help kick on his career and we're happy to give him that platform because we get an exceptional young player to add to our group,” the manager said.
Ramsay’s solitary Scotland cap came in 2022. For a player once tipped to be a long-term option for the national team, that statistic lingers in the background.
Regular football in Paisley, a system that suits his strengths, a manager who trusts him. The stage is there.
What he does with it now will define the next chapter of his career.
