Cafu Champions Player Representation in Football Governance

Cafu has thrown his weight behind what he sees as a genuine shift in how football is run, hailing a decade in which players have finally been moved from the sidelines of governance to the centre of decision-making.

Speaking in a social media address, the Brazil legend homed in on structural reforms that, in his view, have changed the way the game listens to its own protagonists. No longer, he stressed, are players and ex-players wheeled out purely as symbolic figures.

“Over the past 10 years, we have followed the work that FIFA and President Infantino have carried out to promote representation in football – something that had not happened before,” Cafu said. “Players and former players have been given a voice and a place at the table by taking part in committees, projects, and working groups.”

That “place at the table” is not, he insisted, a ceremonial seat. Cafu underlined that the lived experience of those who played at the highest level is feeding directly into sporting policy, from competition formats to development pathways. The message from the group of former professionals is clear: they feel listened to, and they feel their input matters.

“Our opinions are heard, and many of the initiatives carried out in the name of the sport have been shaped by our reflections, ideas, plans, and participation,” he added.

For Cafu, this is about more than boardrooms and documents. It is rooted in a belief in football’s social power and its reach into communities that often have little else.

“We know how football can transform lives, improve societies and expand opportunities to people all over the world; and we are committed to continue bringing that hope to them,” he said. “We remain on hand to support the great progress that our sport has experienced in the past decade, ensuring that it continues to reach and benefit people in all the countries where football is played around the world.”

He also made it clear that this is not a short-term project. The existing working groups of former players are set to keep their seats and their influence, staying involved as new regulations are drafted and fresh development schemes are launched.

The ambition is expansive: to push the game’s growth into every corner of the planet and to ensure that expansion translates into real benefits for local communities. For Cafu and his peers, the task now is to turn that ambition into lasting structures that will outlive their own generation of voices at the table.
