Borussia Mönchengladbach Signs Daiki Hashioka as Injury Replacement
Borussia Mönchengladbach are moving quickly to plug a gap they never expected to open this early in pre-season.
With Yukhym Konoplya sidelined by a knee injury, the club are close to bringing in Japanese international Daiki Hashioka from Slavia Prague, according to Sky Germany. The deal is set up as a loan with an option to buy, and the 27-year-old is expected to undergo his medical on Thursday.
If everything is signed off, Hashioka will become Gladbach’s eighth new arrival of the summer and the second from Japan, following defensive midfielder Zento Uno. It is a clear pattern: fresh energy, tactical flexibility, and a squad being rebuilt with a different profile.
Hashioka offers exactly that. Primarily a right-back, he can also slot into central defence or push higher on the right flank. Last season he spent time on loan at KAA Gent, making 17 appearances, and his ability to cover several roles suddenly looks crucial.
The need became urgent when Konoplya suffered a partial tear of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee during a 2-1 friendly win over Rot-Weiss Essen. The Ukrainian, signed this summer to lock down the right side, is expected to be out for around two months and will miss all team sessions during the Tegernsee training camp.
So Gladbach pivoted. Quickly.
Uno eases his way in
While one Japanese player is close to arriving, the other has just started to bed in.
Zento Uno took part in his first full team session on Tuesday. The 22-year-old was eased through drills with limited physical contact, with the plan to steadily increase his workload before the squad heads to training camp.
To smooth his integration, Gladbach have assigned interpreter Atsushi Waki to work with Uno during tactical meetings and on the training pitch. Head coach Eugen Polanski underlined why that detail matters, stressing that the staff want their messages to land “exactly” as intended and that this week is being used to build Uno up so he can, ideally, train fully once the camp begins.
The schedule leaves little room for a slow start. Gladbach face Hansa Rostock before travelling to Rottach-Egern, where friendlies against local side FC Rottach-Egern and Bundesliga rivals Hoffenheim await. Polanski will want his new pieces, linguistically and tactically, aligned by then.
Rebuild with an edge
Behind the scenes, the numbers show a club reshaping itself with a degree of control. The Foals have spent around €12.5 million on new signings while bringing in roughly €21 million from sales. The balance sheet is in the black, but the squad is far from settled.
Further exits are on the table. Nathan Ngoumou, Tomas Cvancara and Florian Neuhaus are all mentioned as possible departures, names that would change the look and feel of the dressing room if they move on.
Hashioka’s arrival, if completed, will not just be a reaction to bad luck with Konoplya. It fits a broader theme: a more versatile, more mobile Gladbach, with a growing Japanese influence and a coach determined that every instruction, every nuance, is understood.
The question now is simple: will this carefully calibrated rebuild give the Foals the edge they have been missing when the real games start?
