Bernardo Silva and Kylian Mbappe: A Reunion at Real Madrid
Bernardo Silva has barely unpacked in Madrid, but one storyline already crackles above the rest: the reunion tour with Kylian Mbappe.
They were kids when it started. Monaco, two seasons, a teenage Mbappe tearing through defences, a young Silva knitting everything together between the lines. It was fast, fearless football, the kind that launches careers and terrifies opponents.
"We played together for two years at Monaco," Silva told the club’s official website. "He was very young, 17 or 18 years old. I was also very young. We had a very strong connection as teammates. Since then, we’ve played against each other quite a few times, against Paris, against France, and against Madrid."
Now they share a dressing room again, this time under the blinding lights of the Bernabeu and the weight of Real Madrid’s expectations. The stakes are very different. The chemistry, Silva believes, can be the same.
"Now I’m very happy to be with him again and to try to rebuild that connection. Kylian is a unique player who can win games on his own, gives you a lot of goals, and creates many chances in every match. We will work to rebuild that connection and bring joy together to Real Madrid."
That work starts immediately. Pre-season is over, the experimental lineups and fitness runs shelved. The Spanish top flight is back, and Madrid’s margin for error is as thin as ever.
La Liga does not forgive slow starts. Silva knows it.
"I hope to win," he said, looking ahead to the opener. "We need to focus on every match. Every point matters. La Liga is a competition where you can’t afford to drop many points if you want to be champions.
"We have to give the same importance to points in matches that people might consider less important as we do to the big games. We will try to start strong, with a victory and three points."
Next stop: Catalonia. Jose Mourinho’s side head to the RCDE Stadium to face Espanyol, a trip that rarely feels straightforward and certainly won’t be treated as such now. The friendly schedule is gone; this is where reputations are sharpened or dulled.
All eyes will fall on the team sheet. Where does Mourinho place Silva? How close will he play to Mbappe? Wide, inside, between the lines? The tactical answers will come in time, but the emotional pull is obvious: this is the first real glimpse of a partnership reborn.
For Silva, it’s the chance to prove that what they built as teenagers in France can still devastate opponents in Spain. For Mbappe, it’s another elite ally in attack, another mind on the same wavelength.
For Madrid, it could be the difference between chasing the title and dictating it.
