Barcelona’s Transfer Focus: The No. 9 Situation
Barcelona’s transfer window has narrowed to two pressure points now that Rodri is through the door: centre-back and centre-forward. One of those, though, is dominating every conversation inside the club.

Alvarez on the clock
Julian Alvarez wants Barcelona. That much is clear. The Argentine is keen on a move to Catalonia and is scheduled to sit down with Atletico Madrid’s hierarchy later this week to discuss his future.
The problem? Desire is one thing, confrontation another.
So far, Alvarez has not shown the steel to force a move that Atletico do not want to approve. Diego Simeone underlined that stance earlier today, stating openly that the striker will not leave. That public line from the coach only hardens the club’s position ahead of the player’s meeting.
Inside Barcelona, patience has a deadline.
According to the latest from Victor Navarro, sporting director Deco is already working in parallel on alternative options but has decided to give Alvarez a final window to act. If there is no real movement on the player’s situation by Saturday, Barca will pivot.
Not talk. Act.
Work on backup targets is already underway so that, once the weekend hits, the club can immediately trigger those plans rather than start from scratch. That makes Alvarez’s midweek summit with Atletico critical, even if the mood around it is far from optimistic.
A thin striker market
The difficulty for Barcelona is that the centre-forward market is brutally limited this summer. There are not many realistic, high-level options available, and even fewer that fit the club’s financial and sporting needs.
Earlier in the week, Sporting striker Luis Suarez briefly emerged in reports as a possible solution. The idea caught attention given the name and profile, but those links were quickly played down. The interest, at this stage, does not carry strong backing.
So the search moved on.
In recent hours, another name has pushed to the front of the list: Villarreal striker Georges Mikautadze. The Georgian has now been identified as a top target if the Alvarez pursuit collapses under Atletico’s refusal and the player’s reluctance to force the issue.
Barcelona, then, stand at a familiar crossroads. Wait a little longer for the preferred option to fight for the move, or accept the reality of the market and lock in an alternative before someone else does.
