Barcelona's Defensive Search: No Deal for Goncalo Inacio
Barcelona’s search for a new centre-back has taken a clear turn – and it does not lead to Lisbon.
Ronald Araujo’s loan move to Liverpool opened a sizeable hole in the heart of Barça’s defence this summer. The captain’s departure, after a bruising couple of seasons at the club, felt like a reset button for both player and institution. He gets a fresh start at Anfield. Barcelona get a vacancy in one of the most important positions on the pitch.
That vacancy has sparked predictable noise in the market. Names have flown around. One in particular kept circling: Goncalo Inacio of Sporting CP.
No deal for Inacio
According to Fabrizio Romano, that speculation hits a dead end. Barcelona are not working on a deal for the 24-year-old, and the club have denied that any operation is in progress.
Romano went as far as to describe the current level of talks as “zero”. No negotiations. No active pursuit. No quiet, back-channel push.
That stance matters because Barcelona are still widely expected to add another central defender before the window shuts. The need is real. The Inacio link, though, is not.
For now, the Portuguese international should be scratched off the list of realistic options.
Flick’s verdict shapes the market
Romano also drew a parallel with another recent rumour: Cristian Romero. Barcelona were linked with the Argentine, but Hansi Flick did not green-light the move. Without the coach’s approval, the idea went nowhere.
The same dynamic applies with Inacio. Flick and the sporting leadership are aligned. They are not convinced he is the right fit for this project, and a move is described as highly unlikely.
Inacio has built a strong reputation in Portugal as a dependable, left-footed centre-back. But excelling in the Primeira Liga is one thing; stepping into Barcelona’s back line, with its demands in possession and space left behind, is something else entirely. The club, and the coach, are clearly wary of that jump.
Market still wide open
Ruling out Inacio does not mean Barcelona are done with defensive targets. Far from it.
With roughly a week left before deadline day, the club are actively scanning the market for reinforcements. The situation could become even more complex if Alejandro Balde leaves. The left-back is another player who could head for the exit, and his departure would open up a second hole on that side of the defence.
That is where the profile becomes more specific. Deco and his team are understood to be looking closely at players who can cover both roles: a left-footed centre-back who can also operate at left-back. Versatility is no longer a luxury for this squad; it is almost a requirement.
La Masia offers one internal option in Alvaro Cortes, who is viewed as a candidate to step up. Trusting the academy would fit the club’s identity, but the pressure of a long season and the uncertainty around exits mean the door to the transfer market stays wide open.
Barcelona have big defensive decisions to make in the coming days. Araujo is in Liverpool. Inacio is off the table. The question now is simple: who will Flick and Deco trust to anchor the next version of Barça’s back line?
