Barcelona will roll out the red carpet for Rodri at the Joan Gamper Trophy this week – but his first touch in the club’s colours will have to wait.
The Spain captain is expected to be part of the celebrations around Wednesday’s showpiece against Al Ahly, yet he will not feature on the pitch, La Vanguardia report. The club see this night as an introduction, not an instant debut.
A blockbuster deal, finally landing
Barcelona have already done the heavy lifting in the offices. An agreement with Manchester City is in place, the transfer sealed with a package that could climb to €76.5 million.
The structure is clear: €60 million fixed, the rest in bonuses. More than €11 million of those variables are considered highly attainable, meaning City can realistically expect to bank at least €71.5 million from the move.
Rodri is scheduled to land in Catalonia later today, bringing to an end one of the headline transfer stories of the summer. From there, it is down to the formalities: signatures, photos, the usual whirlwind that follows a major signing.
The club intend to present their new midfielder tomorrow at the training facilities rather than at Spotify Camp Nou. The stadium remains a construction site, its renovation ruling out the traditional grand unveiling on the pitch.
Gamper night as a stage, not a starting point
Before he pulls on the shirt in a competitive game, Rodri must pass through the medical room. His medical tests are planned for tomorrow, after which he will officially join Hansi Flick’s squad.
