Barcelona Targets Rodri Transfer with €70m Limit
FC Barcelona have tightened their grip on the Rodri operation, pushing hard to close a deal with Manchester City without smashing through the financial ceiling they set from day one.
The Catalan club, working hand in hand with the midfielder’s camp, have put a fresh series of proposals on the table. The message is blunt: the total package will not go beyond €70 million, according to SPORT.
A deal built to stay under €70m
Inside that limit, Barcelona are ready to move. The Spanish champions are weighing offers of €60m or €65m in guaranteed payments, topped up with performance-related bonuses, which they view as the fairest final proposal for a player entering the last year of his contract.
That figure is not plucked from nowhere. It is close to the amount Manchester City had been willing to accept in previous talks with Real Madrid, and below the €80m they initially quoted to Barcelona at the start of negotiations.
The distance between the clubs has shrunk. Talks have run continuously for several days, and both sides are now working within a much narrower band of numbers. Optimism has grown at Barça that an agreement is within reach, even if the final stretch could still take hours or a couple more days to untangle.
The shared objective is clear: wrap up the transfer before the end of the week.
Race against the clock
Rodri would already prefer to be in Barcelona, training alongside his Spain teammates and settling into his new surroundings. The pace of the talks has not allowed that. The next key date is Friday.
On that day, the midfielder is due back in Manchester for medical tests and the start of pre-season preparations with City. Barcelona’s aim is to ensure the deal is done before then so he never has to make that return trip.
Even if the agreement is not fully signed off by Friday, there is an expectation that City will likely allow him to remain away from Manchester, especially if negotiations have entered the final phase and only details remain.
Star status, star contract
On the player’s side, the groundwork is already complete. Rodri has a verbal agreement with Barcelona on a four-year contract, one that comes with a top-tier salary.
His arrival would immediately propel him into the bracket of the three highest earners in the squad. The numbers reflect his status as a Ballon d’Or winner and the standout performer at the World Cup, as well as his current wage level at Manchester City and the renewal offer the Premier League champions had previously placed in front of him.
Sporting director Deco is leading the operation for Barça, in constant contact with his Manchester City counterpart Hugo Viana as they work to nail down the final structure.
From the start, Barcelona have insisted they will not overpay, pointing directly to the fact that Rodri’s contract runs out at the end of the season. For them, a package capped at €70m, including bonuses, represents a fair and defensible valuation.
The structure most likely to close the remaining gap is clear: €65m guaranteed plus €5m in bonuses linked to collective titles, incentives that are considered relatively straightforward to trigger for a club of City’s and Barça’s ambitions.
The numbers are now edging into alignment. For Barcelona, the feeling is that the decisive breakthrough is no longer a distant prospect, but something that could drop at any moment.
