Barcelona Targets Left-Footed Centre-Back as Deco Pushes for Signing
Barcelona are heading into the final days of the transfer window with a packed agenda and very little margin for error. The club’s shopping list is clear: a striker – with Julian Alvarez still on top of the pile – plus deals for Rodri and Joao Cancelo.
Behind that, though, Deco is quietly driving one more move he considers essential.
Deco’s defensive obsession
The sporting director has spent weeks convinced that Barça need a top-level, left-footed centre-back, even as internal voices questioned whether that should really be a priority. If the finances stretch, he wants that signing on the table before the window shuts.
This isn’t a new idea. At the start of the summer, Deco had already flagged the back line as an area that needed a major upgrade. That belief pushed Barcelona to study a move for Inter’s Alessandro Bastoni. The profile fit, but the operation collapsed: no full sporting consensus, and a price tag the club viewed as excessive.
The debate then went quiet. Other needs took over.
Ronald Araujo’s departure has changed that. His exit has reopened the case, and Barça are back in the market for a central defender.
Flick’s different view
Hansi Flick sees the squad through a slightly different lens. The German coach would not turn down a new centre-back, but he does not see it as the burning issue. For him, the real urgency lies up front, where he wants a centre-forward to lead the line.
Flick feels well covered in central defence. He is delighted with Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin, trusts Andreas Christensen and Eric Garcia, and has taken note of academy defender Alvaro Cortes, who has impressed behind the scenes.
Even so, within the club there is a strong feeling that adding an experienced, left-footed defender would bring security, balance and depth to a group that will be asked to defend high and aggressively all season.
Laporte and Lukeba under the spotlight
Barcelona’s search has focused on a specific profile: a defender capable of stepping straight into the team, much like Inigo Martinez did, but with the added advantage of being naturally left-footed and comfortable in a high line.
Aymeric Laporte has emerged as one of the leading candidates. His camp had indicated the presence of an affordable release clause, which immediately drew Barça’s attention and led the club to explore the operation.
On the pitch, the fit is obvious. Laporte already knows Cubarsi well from their time together at the World Cup, where the pair formed a highly effective partnership. Slotting that understanding into Flick’s back four would be a tempting shortcut to stability.
The problem lies in Bilbao. Athletic insist that no such accessible clause exists and have made it clear they do not intend to negotiate his exit. For Barcelona, that turns a seemingly realistic option into a complicated, potentially blocked path.
So another name has climbed the list: Castello Lukeba of RB Leipzig. Barça scouts have tracked him closely throughout the year and like what they see – a young defender with strong potential, confident distribution and real physical power.
The catch is the cost. Lukeba would require a major outlay at a time when every euro is being weighed against attacking reinforcements and the need to stay within financial limits.
Deco’s last big swing
For now, the centre-back file stays open but parked. Inside the club, the immediate push is to close the deals for a striker, Rodri and Cancelo, with optimism that the latter two operations are nearing the finish line.
Only once those pieces are in place will Barça fully turn back to the defensive puzzle. That is where Deco wants to land his final blow of the window: one more significant signing, a left-footed centre-back to complete the structure of Hansi Flick’s squad.
If the money stretches and the internal debate finally lines up behind him, the last days of the market in Barcelona could belong not to a new goalscorer, but to the defender asked to hold the whole project together.
