Barcelona’s summer rebuild has reached the point where it can’t stall any longer. Rodri and João Cancelo are virtually in the door, Ferran Torres has gone for €50 million, and the squad for next season is starting to take shape.
Now everything pauses for one name: Julián Álvarez.
The Argentine has become the central character in this transfer window for the La Liga champions. According to MARCA, the club see this week as the moment of truth — either Álvarez arrives, or Barcelona rip up that page of the plan and turn to something else.
Right now, the ball is at Álvarez’s feet.
Álvarez waits on key meeting
Barcelona are watching and waiting to see what the Atlético Madrid striker decides. The next move is his, and it could come after a long-delayed meeting that has turned into a storyline of its own.
Álvarez is expected to sit down with Atlético CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín in the coming days, a summit that has already been pushed back several times. In that meeting, the forward will try to break the deadlock and convince Atlético to sit at the table with Barcelona.
The 24-year-old wants Gil Marín to keep what he believes was a clear promise: if he wanted to leave this summer, Atlético would not stand in his way.
If that commitment is honoured, negotiations can finally start. If not, the saga changes tone completely.
Barcelona’s deadline
Inside Barcelona, one thing is non-negotiable: this week cannot drift by without clarity.
Either talks for Álvarez open in earnest, or the club close the file and move on. Deco and Hansi Flick do not want to drag the search for a No. 9 into the final stretch of the window with no firm direction.
There is another twist. Atlético play twice at home this week, against Málaga and Villarreal. Those games could turn into a barometer of the fanbase. Whistles, applause, banners — the reaction of the Metropolitano crowd to Álvarez may influence how far Atlético are willing to go in either keeping him or cashing in.
If the atmosphere turns hostile, a sale looks easier. If the supporters rally behind him, the negotiation becomes far more complicated.
Plan B takes shape
Barcelona cannot afford to be left exposed if Álvarez stays in Madrid.
Several alternative targets are already on the board. Lautaro Martínez, Mikel Oyarzabal, Luis Suárez and Viktor Gyökeres have all been mentioned as potential options to lead the line.
For now, they remain names, not negotiations. Barcelona have not moved decisively for any of them while Álvarez is still in play. That restraint cannot last much longer.
Once Álvarez is definitively out of reach — if that happens — Deco and Flick will have to decide whether to launch a full pursuit of another centre-forward or rethink the structure of the attack entirely.
The false nine route
One scenario on the table is radical in its simplicity: don’t sign a striker at all.
Flick has several players who can operate as false nines and offer fluid movement across the front line. Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, Raphinha, Karim Adeyemi and Anthony Gordon are all capable of playing through the middle in a more flexible, interchangeable system.
That approach would demand goals by committee rather than from a single reference point. It would also place a heavy burden on young shoulders.
Behind them, the club are quietly pleased with what they have seen from the academy and the fringes of the first team. Hamza Abdelkarim and Jesse Bisiwu have both impressed in pre-season, showing an instinct for goals that has not gone unnoticed.
They are not being pushed as immediate solutions, but their progress gives Barcelona another layer of internal cover if the market does not break their way.
For now, though, everything circles back to one conversation in Madrid. If Gil Marín opens the door, Barcelona’s summer plan stays on its original track. If he slams it shut, Deco and Flick will be forced to redraw the map of their attack — and fast.
