Barcelona's Striker Search Intensifies as Balde's Future Hangs in the Balance
Joan Laporta was at the training ground before most of his players on Tuesday. Not for show. With a week left of the summer window, Barcelona’s president wanted eyes and hands on the operation as Hansi Flick and his squad went to work on the pitch – and the club’s executives went to work off it.
Deco arrived almost in step with him. Same entrance, same urgency. Barcelona have several files still open and the clock is ticking hard towards the 1 September deadline.
Striker search tops a crowded agenda
At the top of the list sits the same problem that has loomed since Robert Lewandowski walked out of the door: a pure No 9.
The sporting management are convinced the squad needs a specialist centre-forward, even after a bright attacking start to the season. The 5-0 demolition of Elche lit up the scoreboard and delighted Laporta, but it didn’t alter the internal diagnosis. The team scores, yes. But they still want a reference point up front.
Now comes the brutal part of the window. Barcelona must turn long-running assessments into hard negotiations. Contacts with players and clubs have to accelerate, and fast, as they work out which deals can actually be dragged over the line in the final days.
Laporta and Deco are personally locked onto the striker issue. The pair have kept up an almost constant dialogue in recent weeks, holding repeated meetings to sift through options and track shifting prices around Europe. Every new phone call, every new demand, lands on their desks.
Internal options – but not ideal ones
Flick is not short of bodies who can stand in through the middle. Raphinha can do it. Anthony Gordon can do it. Hamza Abdelkarim can do it. On paper, the flexibility looks rich.
Inside the club, though, the feeling is clear: all three are more dangerous when they start in their natural roles. Raphinha’s edge from wide areas, Gordon’s ability to attack from the flank or drift inside, Abdelkarim’s own strengths – Barcelona see them as weapons to complement a striker, not replace one.
Gordon’s versatility was a key reason Barcelona pushed to sign him. He can hug the touchline or lead the line, giving Flick tactical levers to pull mid-game. The plan, though, is still to hand him a focal point to play off, not to leave him as the only one.
Balde in the spotlight as United circle
The striker chase is not the only storyline running into the final week.
Alejandro Balde’s future remains unresolved after Manchester United made their interest known. The Premier League club are prepared to explore a loan deal. Barcelona, for their part, would rather talk about a permanent sale.
That difference matters. A loan would keep the door open for Balde’s long-term return; a sale would bring in immediate funds and close a chapter. For now, both scenarios sit on the table.
If Balde does move on, Barcelona are ready to react. The sporting management are considering bringing in a left-footed centre-back to strengthen the back line, adding another urgent task to an already crowded list before the window shuts.
Seven days, three big questions
The mood around the club is buoyed by results, especially that five-goal statement against Elche. But the transfer department is working against a different scoreboard: days, not goals.
Seven remain.
Barcelona want a striker. They need clarity on Balde. They are weighing a defensive addition. Laporta and Deco are driving all three fronts at once, trying to separate fantasy from feasible as the market’s final week explodes into life.
By the time the window closes, we’ll know if this early-season optimism has been matched by the ruthlessness of their business – or if a missing No 9 and an unresolved full-back saga will shadow Flick’s first campaign.
