Barcelona Sells Jofre Torrents to Ajax for €6 Million
FC Barcelona have agreed the sale of promising full-back Jofre Torrents to AFC Ajax for around €6 million, according to SPORT, with the Catalan club retaining 50% of the player’s rights.
The deal, which includes fixed and variable payments, was closed on Thursday night when both clubs signed the transfer documents. It ends a long association between Torrents and Barça, and opens a very different chapter in Amsterdam.
From La Masia to Amsterdam
Torrents, 19, joined La Masia in 2017 as a ten-year-old and has climbed steadily through the ranks. His reward came last season with four official first-team appearances, a small sample but enough to place him on the radar of European scouts.
He also featured in this summer’s pre-season friendlies against CE Europa and Birmingham City, a sign that Barcelona wanted to showcase him before making a decision on his future.
Now that decision has been made. The full-back is set to sign a four-year contract with Ajax, his first move outside Spain and into one of Europe’s most renowned talent factories.
Waiting on the green light
The move is agreed. What’s left is logistics.
Torrents is currently waiting for Barcelona’s authorisation to travel to the Netherlands. If the green light comes quickly, he will fly to Amsterdam in the coming hours, complete his medical and sign his contract immediately.
If the paperwork drags, the plan changes. In that case, he would travel on Sunday, watch his new teammates from the stands, and then undergo his medical on Monday.
Ajax host Heerenveen at 16:45 on Sunday in the second round of the Eredivisie, a first glimpse of the environment Torrents is stepping into, even if he has to wait to be involved.
Fierce competition at Ajax
This is no gentle landing.
Ajax, demanding by tradition and expectation, have already invested €10 million this summer in left-back Caio Henrique. Torrents will arrive to fight directly with him for minutes and a starting role.
For the teenager, it is a sharp test of his level. For Ajax, it is another calculated bet on youth, with Barcelona still holding 50% of his rights in case that bet pays off in a big way.
Deco’s clear-out gathers pace
On the Barcelona side, the transfer fits neatly into Deco’s broader plan to trim the squad before the window closes.
Torrents’ departure is not expected to be the last. At least five more exits remain on the table, and the club has already taken steps to protect those assets while talks continue.
Marc Casado, Hector Fort, Tommy Marques, Guille Fernandez and Toni Fernandez have all been training away from the main group in recent days. The aim is simple: avoid injuries that could derail potential moves and keep options open.
All five are available for transfer. None are in Hansi Flick’s plans for the season.
For Torrents, the path is now clear: swap La Masia for De Toekomst, Barcelona for Ajax, and promise for responsibility. The question is no longer whether he can make the jump, but how quickly he can turn this first move abroad into a permanent place in one of Europe’s most unforgiving shop windows.
