Barcelona Secures Rodri in €76.5m Transfer Deal
Barcelona have reached an agreement in principle with Manchester City to sign Rodri in a deal worth around €76.5 million, landing the Spain captain in one of the headline moves of the summer.
Only the paperwork stands between Barça and the formal completion of the transfer, with documents already being exchanged between the clubs. Rodri, 30, is expected in the city in the coming days and could be unveiled before Wednesday’s Joan Gamper Trophy clash against Al Ahly at Spotify Camp Nou.
This is not a move that came easily. Barcelona saw two bids rejected before returning over the weekend with a third offer that finally hit City’s valuation. With just one year left on Rodri’s contract at the Etihad Stadium, City were prepared to cash in at the right price rather than risk losing control of the situation next summer.
Real Madrid also tried to lure the Spain midfielder, but once talks with Barcelona accelerated, sources say Rodri’s preference was clear: Catalonia over the capital.
A new spine for Flick’s Barcelona
Rodri arrives as the centrepiece of a wider rebuild under Hansi Flick. The midfield anchor is set to be one of two familiar Premier League faces returning to Camp Nou, with Joao Cancelo poised to rejoin the club as a free agent.
Together, they would become Barcelona’s fourth and fifth signings of a frantic window, following the captures of Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi and Jesse Bisiwu.
The plan was not always to go this big in midfield. A long-term injury to Frenkie de Jong forced the club to reassess, opening the door to a search for a new pivot. Rodri was not an initial priority, but once his situation at City shifted after his World Cup triumph with Spain, Barcelona moved quickly and decisively.
The reshaping is far from finished. The champions are still hunting a striker after the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, the latter set to join Paris Saint-Germain. Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez has emerged as the top target to lead the line.
As the pieces fall into place, betting markets have already reacted, with football betting sites starting to install Barcelona among the favourites to retain their La Liga crown under Flick.
From Villarreal prodigy to Ballon d’Or winner
Rodri’s journey to this point has been relentless. He came through the academy at Villarreal, earned his reputation at Atletico Madrid and then became a cornerstone of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City after a 2019 move triggered his €70m release clause — a club-record fee at the time.
In Manchester, he collected trophies at a remarkable rate: four Premier League titles, a Champions League, the FA Cup and the EFL Cup. He grew from a promising holding midfielder into one of the most complete controllers in world football.
The last two seasons have tested him physically. A serious knee injury ruled him out for much of the 2024-25 campaign, followed by a hamstring problem last season. Yet he returned at the highest possible level this summer, driving Spain to World Cup glory and taking player of the tournament honours — just as he had done at the previous European Championship.
That Euro triumph underpinned his Ballon d’Or win in 2024, confirmation of his status at the summit of the game.
Now he heads to Barcelona not as a gamble, but as a statement. Inside the club, Rodri is viewed as the signing who can elevate Flick’s back-to-back Spanish champions again — a new axis for a team that expects not just to compete, but to dominate.
