Barcelona's Search for Experienced Centre-Back After Araujo's Departure
Barcelona’s defensive plan for the 2026/27 season has been ripped up and rewritten since Ronald Araujo packed his bags for Liverpool. Now Deco is racing the clock.
The sporting director has zeroed in on one clear priority before the window shuts: an experienced, left-footed centre-back who can walk straight into Hansi Flick’s rotation and cope with the demands of a long, unforgiving campaign.
Inside the reshaped defence
Araujo’s loan to Liverpool has left a sizeable hole in the spine of the team. What was already a delicate balance at centre-back now looks exposed.
Flick is currently left with Pau Cubarsí, Eric Garcia, Gerard Martin and Andreas Christensen as his main options. There is quality there, but not much margin for error. Or injury. Or suspension. Over a full season, that’s a dangerous gamble.
The pressure on the remaining defenders will be heavy. Cubarsí is still very young, Garcia has had an uneven trajectory, Christensen has battled fitness issues in past campaigns, and Martin is still establishing himself. The room for rotation that every top side needs has almost vanished.
Cortes at a crossroads
On paper, Álvaro Cortes could help ease the strain. In reality, his situation only complicates things.
Flick still sees him as an option, but inside the club there are serious doubts about whether he is ready to shoulder the responsibility of being a regular first-team centre-back. Occasional appearances are one thing; grinding through an entire season at Barcelona’s level is something else entirely.
There is another twist. Cortes does not want to drop back to Barça Atlètic and is already attracting offers from elsewhere. A departure in the coming days is firmly on the table. If he goes, Barcelona’s thin defensive line becomes even more fragile.
That is why Deco is not looking for a project. He wants someone who arrives and competes from day one, not another youngster who needs a season or two to grow into the role.
A very specific profile
The search is narrow by design. Barcelona want a left-footed centre-back, with experience, who fits within tight financial limits. That combination makes the market small and the margin for error even smaller.
Luka Vuskovic was high on the club’s list before he chose Brighton. The admiration was real, but at 19 he did not match what Deco needs right now. The same logic rules out Jon Martin of Real Sociedad for the immediate vacancy: plenty of potential, not enough mileage at the top level.
Even Cristian Romero, with his pedigree and proven quality, has not been viewed as the perfect answer. Barcelona are not simply chasing the biggest name or the most highly rated defender available. The profile matters more than the headline.
Deco’s task is clear and unforgiving: find a left-footed centre-back, experienced enough to steady the back line, affordable enough to fit the books, and ready to compete with Cubarsí, Garcia, Martin and Christensen from the first whistle.
If he fails, Barcelona head into a long season one injury away from a full-blown defensive crisis.
