Barcelona Confirms Offer for Julian Alvarez
Barcelona vice-president Rafael Yuste has lifted the lid on one of the summer’s worst-kept secrets: the club did make an offer for Julian Alvarez.
He did not dress it up. “We made an offer and that’s that,” Yuste said, speaking to TV3 after Barcelona’s Joan Gamper Trophy outing.
No numbers, no contract details, no hint of what comes next. But confirmation all the same that Barcelona went to Atletico Madrid for the Argentine forward – and were rebuffed.
A delicate battle between La Liga rivals
Alvarez has been consistently linked with a move to Barcelona, his name circling the Camp Nou offices all summer as the club search for more firepower. Atletico, though, have drawn a clear line: the striker is not for sale.
Reports in Spain have suggested Alvarez wants to leave Atletico Madrid. Barcelona, for their part, are still weighing up options to sharpen their attack before the window closes. The ingredients are there for a transfer saga between two domestic rivals.
Yuste, however, chose not to fan the flames.
He refused to go into detail on Alvarez, stressing that Barcelona must tread carefully when speaking about a player who remains under contract at Atletico.
“I don’t like to talk about players who aren’t ours,” he said, referencing the long-standing relationship with Atletico chief executive Miguel Ángel Gil and president Enrique Cerezo. For Yuste, the dynamic between the clubs matters as much as any single deal.
“These are things that I would say are part and parcel of football. We must maintain decorum and let common sense prevail,” he added, via Mundo Deportivo.
The message was clear: Barcelona have knocked on the door, but they are not looking to start a war.
What he did not reveal is whether that original proposal is still on the table or if Barcelona are preparing a second push. On that point, he stayed firmly in the shadows.
Focus back on the pitch
Once he had admitted the bid, Yuste moved quickly to steer the conversation away from boardrooms and back to the grass.
“We must focus entirely on what Hansi said recently: that we have a match on Sunday and we have to go out and win it,” he insisted.
For Barcelona, the calendar is relentless. Thirty-eight La Liga fixtures, each one worth three points, each one a small step in a title race they cannot afford to misjudge.
“There are 38 matches in La Liga and each one is worth three points, so we’re fully focused on trying to secure our first win,” Yuste said.
The subtext is obvious: the market matters, but results will define the season.
Window still open, Barcelona still hunting
That does not mean Barcelona are done.
Yuste made it clear the club remain open to strengthening before the transfer window shuts. The recent deal for Rodri served as a reference point, and he was quick to highlight the people driving those operations.
“We have a great technical team, with Deco, Bojan and Alejandro Echeverría, who is also doing an exceptional job, and the transfer window is still open,” he said.
Deco leads the sporting department, Bojan and Echeverría work alongside him, and together they are still scanning the market for the right opportunities.
Barcelona have already shown their hand with Alvarez. The bid is in the past, the admiration is not. The clock is ticking on this window – and the question now is whether that interest turns into one last decisive move, or stays as the offer that never went any further.
