Barcelona's New Season Brings Fresh Shirt Numbers
Barcelona’s new season starts with more than just fresh opponents. It starts with fresh numbers.
With Elche visiting on Sunday for the opening La Liga fixture, the league’s official website has now locked in the shirt numbers for Barcelona’s latest signings and a couple of familiar faces.
- Rodri takes over the No. 16 shirt
- Anthony Gordon is handed No. 17
- Karim Adeyemi will run out in No. 14
- Andreas Christensen, after signing his new contract, moves into No. 15
One name is still missing from the list. João Cancelo does not yet appear on La Liga’s site, though the expectation around the club is simple: he keeps No. 2, just as he did last season. New arrival Jesse Bisiwu, meanwhile, will start out with a B team squad number rather than a senior one.
The reshuffle has triggered a small emotional shift inside the dressing room. Fermín López, who had worn No. 16, slides into the No. 7 shirt vacated by Ferran Torres. The midfielder has already admitted the change tugs at him a little.
“It makes me a bit sad to give up the number 16 because it had a special place in my heart after these seasons with the first team. But I'm sure it will be in good hands,” he said previously.
That “good hands” line now points directly at Rodri.
Gordon’s arrival has another consequence. The former Newcastle man assumes No. 17 from Marc Casadó. Casadó has not left the club yet, but inside Barça he is viewed as being on his way out, and currently holds no squad number at all.
For Barcelona supporters, the appearance of these numbers on La Liga’s website carries weight. In recent seasons, registration has been a soap opera, tangled in Financial Fair Play limits and stalled revenue. The league’s database became an unofficial scoreboard: if a player appeared there with a number, it usually meant the paperwork had gone through.
Local media now report that Barça have successfully registered their new signings. No last-minute rush, no late-night drama, no scramble to free up salary space on the eve of kick-off.
For once, as the numbers go up and the season begins, everything around Barcelona’s squad list feels exactly as the club would want it: calm.
