Barcelona Pursues Leipzig’s Lukeba in Centre-Back Search
Barcelona’s search for a new centre-back has dragged on all summer. Now, at last, there is a concrete move on one of their main targets.
Barcelona call Leipzig
According to SPORT, Barcelona have opened talks with RB Leipzig to ask about Castello Lukeba’s situation and price. The French defender, left-footed and comfortable building from the back, fits exactly the profile the club have been chasing.
Deco and Hansi Flick are both strong admirers. Lukeba has been high on their shortlist for a long time and is viewed inside the club as one of the standout young centre-backs in Europe.
Leipzig know it. So does the Premier League. Lukeba already has several options from England on the table, yet he has stayed in the Bundesliga so far. A move to Barcelona, though, clearly tempts him, and he is open to making the leap.
For now, the numbers look manageable on paper. His market value sits at around €30 million, and Barcelona have asked Leipzig what fee they would demand to let him go.
Araujo gone, Kounde in the balance
The urgency is obvious. Ronald Araujo has already left for Liverpool, ripping a hole in the heart of Barcelona’s defence and pushing centre-back recruitment to the top of the club’s agenda.
What happens next, though, hinges heavily on Jules Kounde.
The Frenchman has offers and a departure is not ruled out. If Kounde leaves, Barcelona are expected to go after a bigger, more expensive defensive signing, willing to stretch for a marquee name to stabilise the back line.
That decision will shape the Lukeba operation.
Flick’s preferences narrow the field
Barcelona have been linked with several alternatives in recent weeks – Aymeric Laporte, Alessandro Bastoni, Lukeba himself, even Cristian Romero. None of those tracks has truly advanced.
Inside the club, Flick’s stance is already trimming the list. The coach is clearly opposed to some of the suggested names, including Bastoni and Romero, which only increases Lukeba’s importance in the internal debate.
Right now, given the financial reality, the lack of progress on other fronts and Flick’s preferences, Lukeba stands out as perhaps Barcelona’s most realistic bet at centre-back, alongside Laporte.
The question is simple and brutal: do they move decisively for the Leipzig defender now, or wait for the Kounde domino to fall and risk losing one of the most coveted young stoppers on the market?
