Barcelona’s search for a left-footed centre-back has taken another sharp turn, with Matteo Moretto making it clear that two of the most talked-about names are simply not in the frame.
The club wants a natural left-footer at the back, someone to sharpen the defensive line and hand Hansi Flick a specialist option to balance his back four. That much is known. Almost everything else, Barcelona are trying to keep in the dark.
Reports in recent days painted a picture of a club moving quietly, almost silently, in the market. Moretto then dropped the key hint: the defender they are working on does not play in Spain and is not a name that casual fans would instantly recognise.

The RB Leipzig defender has been on Barcelona’s radar, and Flick is understood to appreciate the Frenchman’s ability to operate both as a centre-back and as a left-back. But that theory has now been shut down.

Moretto has drawn a thick line through Lukeba’s name.
Despite previous interest and his obvious qualities, the journalist insists that Barcelona are not working on a deal for the 23-year-old and has ruled out the Leipzig defender’s profile “100%”. Any idea that he might be the “mystery” left-footed signing can be parked.
It is not a question of suitability. Lukeba would bring exactly the kind of versatility Flick values, covering several roles across the back line and offering natural balance on the left. He fits the profile, but he is not the target.
Barcelona’s search is pointed elsewhere.
The message is clear: the club are not simply fishing from the pool of obvious, high-profile names already circulating in the gossip columns. The sporting department is chasing a different kind of signing — a lower-profile defender, someone operating away from the usual spotlight.
Goncalo Inacio also off the table
Goncalo Inacio falls into the same category.
The Sporting CP centre-back has been another regular in the rumour mill whenever Barcelona’s need for a left-footed defender is discussed. Yet Moretto’s information suggests the Portuguese international can also be crossed off the list.
The key detail is recognition.
According to the journalist, the player Barcelona are actively working to sign is less well known than both Lukeba and Inacio. That single clue helps explain the current silence around names: if the target is not a mainstream figure, there is simply less noise, fewer leaks, and far less speculation.
For now, that suits Barcelona perfectly.
They appear intent on keeping the operation tightly sealed while they push ahead with a deal for a defender who does not sit among the obvious candidates.
