Barcelona Maintain Interest in Rashford as United Face Big Decision
Barcelona have not walked away from Marcus Rashford. Far from it. The Spanish giants remain in contact with the forward’s representatives as they weigh up their attacking options and explore a deal that could yet drag him back from Manchester United to the Nou Camp before the window shuts.
Rashford is back at Old Trafford this summer and in United colours for the first time in 18 months. Barcelona chose not to trigger their €30million (£26m / $35m) option to buy after his loan spell, despite a campaign that brought 28 goal contributions across all competitions. The numbers were strong. The decision was cold.
From the start, Barcelona had pushed for another loan. Rashford still had two years left on his United contract, and a temporary move suited their finances and flexibility. United refused to play along. The Premier League club made it clear they would only entertain a permanent sale.
So Rashford has returned and, for now, he returns as United’s highest-paid player. Michael Carrick and his staff have brought him back into the first-team group and are prepared to use him this season. He is training. He is involved. He is, officially at least, part of the plan.
But the story is not closed.
There is still a live possibility that Rashford leaves before the transfer window shuts, with Barcelona firmly in the frame. Other clubs have spoken to his camp, but the size of the financial package narrows the field dramatically. Only a handful of teams can realistically take on his wages and the likely fee. Barcelona remain one of them.
Rashford would not need convincing. He would gladly return to Catalunya. The question hangs over United. Would they soften their stance and accept a loan, even one that includes an obligation to buy? At this stage, that remains unclear.
Barcelona’s attacking puzzle
Barcelona’s need in attack has only sharpened since last season ended. Rashford has gone back to England, Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres have both departed, and Roony Bardghji has been ruled out for the season through injury. Goals and depth have disappeared in a hurry.
They have moved to plug the gaps, bringing in Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, but the rebuild up front is not finished. Lines of communication with Rashford’s representatives have stayed open as Barcelona keep several options alive.
Complicating everything is their drawn-out pursuit of Julian Alvarez. Barcelona are still working on a deal for the Argentinian international, but Atletico Madrid have dug in. Their message has been consistent: Alvarez is not for sale. No compromise, no softening, no hint of a climbdown so far.
That stalemate is shaping Barcelona’s market. With Atletico refusing to budge, Rashford’s name stays on the table. If the Alvarez chase finally hits a wall, the Englishman instantly becomes more than just a contingency.
United’s internal debate
For United, the decision is far from straightforward. Rashford is back in the fold, one of the Premier League’s biggest wage commitments sitting in their dressing room. On paper, they have a top-level forward. On the balance sheet, they have a major financial weight.
Inside the club, there is ongoing debate about the best long-term solution. Do they carry that salary and back Carrick to restore Rashford to his best, or do they cash in if Barcelona – or another elite club – eventually put forward a package that makes financial sense?
Right now, Rashford is a Manchester United player. He trains at Carrington, he pulls on the shirt, he is available for selection. But Barcelona have not shut the door, and United have not locked it from their side either.
The window is ticking down. One big decision, from either club, could still flip Rashford’s season – and perhaps both teams’ attacking plans – on its head.
