Barcelona Fails to Plan Farewell for Lionel Messi

Barcelona are not working on a tribute or farewell match for Lionel Messi, despite the club icon edging towards the end of his career and repeated public calls for a proper goodbye.

Journalist Adrian Sanchez has told Barça Universal that, as things stand, there is no active plan inside the club to stage an official homage to Messi. No date pencilled in. No farewell game in the works. Nothing concrete.

That silence sits on top of a relationship that remains badly scarred.

Messi is the greatest player in Barcelona’s history, the face of their modern era and the symbol of their most dominant teams. Yet his exit in 2021 left a fracture that has still not been repaired. The way it ended still hangs over the Camp Nou, even as the stadium itself is being rebuilt.

A split born from the balance sheet

The break-up did not come because Barcelona no longer believed in Messi on the pitch. It came because the numbers stopped adding up.

In 2021, Barcelona were unable to renew his contract under La Liga’s financial rules and wage limits. Joan Laporta had campaigned for the presidency on the promise of keeping Messi at Camp Nou, but the club ultimately pulled the offer that would have allowed him to stay.

The decision left Messi devastated and sent him to Paris Saint-Germain. It also shattered his trust in Laporta. The president later admitted their relationship was “not what it used to be”, a stark confession given the history they shared.

One moment captured the distance. Laporta has spoken of an awkward meeting at a Ballon d'Or ceremony, where Messi felt they should not even greet each other. For two men once so closely aligned, it was a telling scene.

With that backdrop, any talk of a grand farewell was never going to be straightforward.

From statues and promises to a standstill

Earlier this year, speculation flared again. Reports suggested Barcelona could finally organise a tribute match, a night to bring Messi back in front of a full house in the city he defined.

Laporta did little to kill the idea. He publicly stated that “Leo deserves a statue at Camp Nou”, a line that fed hopes of a broader celebration and a formal goodbye once the stadium’s renovation was complete.

But the latest information points in a different direction. Despite the rhetoric, there is no immediate move to transform those words into an actual event. No official tribute is being prepared, no farewell match is being negotiated.

Laporta continues to call Messi a Barcelona legend and has spoken of his desire to mend their relationship over time. He has also floated the idea that a proper public homage could arrive after the new Camp Nou is finished.

For now, though, the club’s position is clear: there is no tribute planned. The greatest player in Barcelona’s history still waits for a final night in the stadium that made him – and the longer the wait goes on, the harder the question becomes.
