Atletico Madrid Targeting Jorge Salinas Amid Manchester United Interest

Atletico Madrid are moving aggressively to land Racing Santander defender Jorge Salinas, accelerating talks as they try to fend off growing interest from Manchester United.

United identified the 19-year-old in July as a serious left-back option and have tracked him closely ever since. Scouts followed him throughout last season as he helped Racing secure promotion to LaLiga, then doubled down on their interest by monitoring him at close quarters during the summer.

Salinas spent three weeks with Spain at the European Under-19 Championship in Wales, where United representatives watched every step. The reports that came back only backed up what they already believed: this is a teenager who can handle a higher level. Salinas played a central role as Spain went on to lift the trophy, sharpening the focus on his next move.

Now comes the decision. United are weighing up whether to move from admiration to action and trigger his €16million (£13.7m / $18.6m) release clause.

That figure is already the product of his rapid rise. The clause increased significantly after Racing’s promotion, a jump that cooled earlier interest from Barcelona, who had viewed him as a long-term project before his buyout fee doubled and the deal lost its appeal.

Atletico, though, see something different.

They are not circling with a development plan; they want Salinas in their first-team squad. After allowing Matteo Ruggeri to join Aston Villa, the Madrid club have stepped up negotiations over the past month, intent on closing a deal before the window tightens and the competition stiffens.

Sources indicate Atletico know exactly where United stand. They are aware of contact between Old Trafford, Racing and the player’s camp, and that knowledge has sparked concern that the Premier League side could soon formalise their interest. The response has been clear: push harder, move faster, get ahead.

For United, Salinas sits in a broader left-back reshuffle rather than as a single make-or-break target. Lewis Hall of Newcastle remains their preferred option, and United are actively trying to prise him from St James’ Park. Newcastle, however, are digging in and have shown no willingness to sell, forcing United to keep other avenues open.

That is where Salinas becomes more than just a name on a list. He has moved into the bracket of serious alternative, alongside RB Leipzig’s David Raum, who is also on the club’s shortlist. Club Brugge’s Joaquin Seys has been watched too, but Belgian sources are adamant he will not be leaving this summer, closing off that route.

So the race tightens.
